7 Common Mistakes Managers Make That Cause Employees to Quit
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I know you don’t want to hear it but you may be the cause for why your people want to quit. Here are 7 reasons why they do it
The First Question You Need to Practice Asking
This is Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and people hire me for no BS career advice.
That can relate to the job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, dealing with workplace issues or career transition. In other words, it’s a holistic approach to you in your career. I thought I would do something today related to mistakes managers make the cause their people to quit. I know that’s painful for many of you, because it’s putting the blame on you and not on recruiters who you think they steal your people, but they really don’t. So let’s talk about some of those reasons. And I’ve got seven of them that I think are suitable for many of you.
The first one is not really communicating effectively. So if you’re not clear, or you frequently cause enough frustration and confusion among your people, this

can lead them to feeling disconnected from others and wanting to leave. I know I’ve worked in places like that, where they tell you one thing, and then later on, it’s, ‘I didn’t say that,’ or ‘what I meant to say,’ this is the worst one, ‘what I meant to say was,’ and I was supposed to read their mind.
The second one is not giving credit where it’s due. People who don’t recognize and reward the hard work of their team can cause resentment and demotivate them, which can lead them to feeling undervalued and wanting to leave. Years ago, I saw an image at a financial firm, where there were the people who had created this new financial product that was bringing in a ton of money into Asset Management at that firm. It was pretty clear that the one guy who’d really done the work was the guy who was in a shirt with no tie. And then there were all the people in suits who were piling on to his work and ,claiming credit. So instead of focusing on your people, and their contribution you credit grab from them.
The third is not providing opportunities for growth and development. And when you don’t do this, they feel like they’re going to stagnate and get bored. Of course, they’re going to want to leave. Who wants to think that they’re going to be doing the same work for the next 30 years of your life! Do you?
Not setting clear expectations is number four. Managers who don’t set clear goals and expectations for their team. Now this can cause confusion and uncertainty because they’re not really sure what it is you want them to accomplish by when. And then from there. Concurrent with that is
Number five, not being approachable and supportive. When you’re not approachable, or you’re unsupportive, staff winds up feeling feeling less than, because they feel like they’re being set up.
Number six is the culture, which I know . . . this one I know very, very well, not creating a positive work culture. Managers who have a toxic or negative work culture can create disengagement and demotivate their team. And this results in people wanting to move to a more positive environment.
Lastly, treating people like animals, or like, as human beings, they’re like zero defect manufacturing facilities. You can’t make a mistake. There’s nothing you can do that’s right. And the result winds up being they feel lost, because they’re asked to be inhuman. They’re asked to never make a mistake. And I know you make mistakes, but you don’t think that they can.

I agree with everything said in this video. And that’s why these companies will continue to lose their best talent. Unfortunately I had to learn this the hard way.
It is ridiculous
