Five things to consider before signing a severance agreement. First, know the deadline for signing it. You may want to be consulting with an attorney, and you need to have time to do that. Second, are there any WARN Act requirements in your state that are more generous than those of the federal government? Some states give 90 days whereas the US government gives 60.
Take a closer look at confidentiality clauses in the agreement. You don’t want to give away rights that you have, just because it’s in the agreement. But what are you willing to give up in exchange for severance–like the ability to sue, you may want to definitely consult an attorney before you give up that. Lastly, learn ways to get support after you agree. You may want to get letters of reference or even language of the agreement that they won’t oppose you getting unemployment.
