5 Things Every Resume Should Do
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
What to Do If Your Offer is Rescinded
Creating a stand-out resume is not easy. You have to think like the person who is reading it and everyone has different tastes and opinions about what they
want to see. However, IMO, there are a few things resumes should do in order to get more interviews.
1. Make a case for why you are qualified for the job you are applying for within one PageDown
2. Not be generic unless you are posting it to your profile on LinkedIn or a job board. The broken watch is right twice a day and generic resumes will get you the same mediocre results and cost you opportunities you should be interviewing for.
3. Include metrics for your impact. That can be money saved, money earned, or a percentage improvement over what was previously done or what is typically done.
4. Include city, state, AND zip code in your resume so that firms can find you in their ATS in the future. Searching for people isn’t just about the right keywords. It is always location. Without your zip code, when they run a search within a radius of a location (zip code), you will be missed.
5. Emphasize relevant experience and minimize the irrelevant experience. You’ve seen a job description or spoken with someone who knows the role. The reader or the system wants to know how you can fit. If you dilute your resume with too much extraneous information, you may not be interviewed because that may be interpreted as you haven’t done what they need you to do that much.
