4 Steps to Making Changes | The No BS Coaching Advice Podcast

Trying to change or do something important? There are really 4 steps you have to do … are you really best off working with a coach to do them?

Today’s show is about 4 steps to making change.  I think it’s best if you work with a coach on this, but you may not need one.  Just are following this formula and I think you’ll start moving for it.  In a lot of ways in your life.

The 1st step is, “What do you want to do?  Whom do you want to become?  Whom do you want to be when you grow up?”  Spend some time with these questions because my next question is, “Why?”

I don’t think it’s really useful for you if you follow some trivial goal like, “I must read a book by Tuesday,” or, “Write take one page of something by Friday.”  I want to think in terms of something significant that you’re looking to accomplish with your life.

The next step is to ask yourself, “Why does this matter to you?  What point do you have in doing this?”

The 3rd step is to conduct experiments, doing stuff that’s going to move the needle forward in the direction of where you want to go to.  I use the example of, “I want to write a book.”

Why do you want to do that?

“I want to help people and create a legacy.”

What’s the 1st step that you want to take?

“I think tomorrow morning, I want to spend a half-hour writing.”

I want to give you a sense of what those 1st 3 steps are and how it might flow using that as an example.

The 4th step is to do a review.  Did you do it?  What got in the way?  The idea is not to punish yourself if you didn’t do it but to think in terms of learning.  What you learned from doing or not doing?  Was it easy?  Was it hard?  What was getting in the way?  If you think in terms of this being a learning opportunity as opposed to BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE or being accountable for your actions or all those punishing terms, what you will find is that you will start moving the needle forward.

There is a fifth one that you may not want to do right away.  That one is to figure out how you can have some fun doing what you want to do.  How can you make it lighthearted?  Bring a spirit of enjoyment is so that it’s not about work and drudgery and task and adding something to your to-do list.  It’s about doing something meaningful that you want to do.

I know that when I was young and I had to do things for fun, it was a lot easier to do that when it became a job.

If you need support with this, I’ll be happy to coach you, not for free.  Send me an email at JeffAltman@TheBigGameHunter.us and in the subject line put the word, “Coaching,” and in the body, tell me what it’s about.
