Being Bold? No, SUPERBOLD!

Today we’re gonna be looking at 10 strategies for making yourself more credible with your current employer and frankly, with other employers too, because building credibility is essential for career success these days. It’s particularly important whether you’re starting a new job trying to advance in your career, or trying to attract employers to you. So here are 10 things that you can do to build your professional credibility and enhance your value to employers, both your current one and future ones.

And the first thing is, develop a strong personal brand. I keep coming back to this time and again, whether it’s internal to your organization, and/or external, building a reputation as an expert, by showcasing skills experiences, successes online and in person is pivotal to your career.

Communicate effectively. Practice clear and concise communication skills, both verbally and in writing to effectively convey ideas and expertise. Verbally, start practicing at Toastmasters meetings. Go to other venues where you have a chance to speak, make mistakes and have it not be costly. Right? Start writing online, short articles, comments. Start with comments if that’s where you feel more comfortable, that allow you to put your ideas out front and allow others to discover you.

Build your technical skills by keeping up to date with the latest industry trends and trends in technology.

Leadership skills. Show initiative, take charge, demonstrate strong decision-making skills, as well as collaborative capabilities.

Problem solving. Learn to tackle complex problems and offer innovative solutions. This is where collaboration can come in very effectively for you by being able to reach out to others, get their opinions, ask questions, listen and learn.

Which leads to demonstrating a willingness to learn.

The Thrill Is Gone

Be adaptable and adjust to new situations, teams, environments. You also want to be continuously learning. There’s so many venues now for professional development opportunities to learn new skills, tools and technologies. YouTube is fabulous for this, but also thinks think in terms of LinkedIn Learning where you could pick up free certifications in a number of different disciplines that will demonstrate your commitment to professional development.

Networking. Expand your professional network by attending industry events, participating in professional organizations, and connecting with colleagues, connecting with people who you don’t know and following up with them so that in this way, you build relationships now that might prove beneficial to you in the future. Show up. Perform consistently. Take ownership and meet deadlines. There’s nothing worse than someone who makes commitments that they don’t keep. It’s a disappointment and eventually hurt you.

Lastly, build your reputation as a reliable, trustworthy and accountable professional, who delivers results. Doing this, you can establish a strong professional reputation and increase your value to employers not just simply your current one, but the others outside your organization as well.
