Why You Need More Qualifications for a High-Income Job
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Most employers value academic accomplishments, but in many sectors, having a college degree is not the be-all and end-all. For high-income roles, most recruiters seek to find employees who are good all-round performers, with plenty in the way of non-academic skills.
High-income jobs attract professionals who are accomplished professionally, personally, and academically. In this article, we explore why you need more than just excellent qualifications to secure a high-income job.
Industry experience
Qualifications can equip you with plenty of theoretical knowledge, but a high-income job is going to require some real experience in the field or industry. Employers want to know that you’re up-to-speed on the latest trends and best practices – they don’t want to have to train their employees on the basics. Plus, any potential employee who has been in the game for a while is likely to come with industry contacts, which could be profitable to the company.
Technical skills
Most high-income roles can’t be learned on the job. For example, a career in law or medicine requires years of practical experience alongside impressive grades in qualifying exams. For these sorts of roles, you can’t just learn the theory and expect to jump into practicing status. Having technical skills that you’ve learned outside of academic study will help to qualify you for roles that require a certain level of expert skill.
Ambition and drive
Your achievements demonstrate how proactive you are to potential employers. Having additional skills and qualifications outside of those learned through education can indicate a willingness to progress and make a name for yourself in your industry.
Someone who has gone out of their way to reach academic, professional and personal goals will be ambitious and driven. These qualities are important for anyone looking to work a high-income job, as they’ll help to further the company. Plus, high-paying roles tend to come with much more responsibility, so employers won’t want to hire someone who is flaky or can’t commit to achieving a goal.
Take control of your professional development
The truth is, most people start somewhere at the bottom – you get out of college and need to work your way up to a high-income job. However, the speed at which you progress is up to you. Take control of your development, and commit to achieving in all areas of your life if you want to impress potential employers.
