What’s the Right Decision for You? | JobSearchTV.com
0:07 I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach. And there's going to be a point where you get a job offer and people are going to talk to you about this great opportunity with a terrific team of people. Did I mention we'rel ike family here?and we really think you can make an incredible contribution to our organization. And for some of you, that's not really paramount. What's really paramount to you is living the life that you want, not living the life that your employer wants. I'm not telling you to do one thing or another, I just want to be clear. But I want YOU to be clear, in order to sort this out. Because at the time you receive an offer, it's very seductive. There's money there, there's opportunity there. But that will have an effect on the rest of your life, doesn't it? And people are going to pressure you. They're going to tell you what they think are right, because that's what they do. But what do you want? There's a former football coach who oncetalked about taking over a team and said, everyone tells you what to do. The players tell you what to do. The owners tell you what to do. The General Manager tells you what to do. The columnists and sports writers, they tell you what to do. The fans tell you what to do. And sometimes you just got to say, 'Shut up, or I'm going to wreck this thing. Well, what's right for you? And the questions to ask yourself at the beginning of your search, ideally, but it's okay to ask at the end, as long as you can be honest with yourself, is "what's most important to you in the next job, or opportunity? What will you need to see or hear to belief it's a good choice, and how does that work with the rest of my life, because you gotta bring that in as well. It's not about your wife, husband or partner, or kids, if you have any. It's not about your pets or your house. It's about you, and what works for you in your life. If it's the high powered career, great! Go for it. But be clear about it. Because everything we do involves a choice that has an impact on other situations. There's opportunity costs that we lose with our choices or gain as a result of our choices. Again, take some time to write down these answers--what's most important to you in the next job or organization? What will you need to see or hear or feel to believe it's a good choice. And once you have, hopefully a lengthy list of options, I want you to prioritize them so that, in this way, at the time of the offer, it's not that hard because you can see how things match up with what works for you. I hope you found this helpful. I'm Jeff Altman. Ellen Goodman is a Pulizer prize winning columnist; she was one; she's left that and is now doing something of personal interest to herself. And she wrote, "Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work, driving through traffic in a car that you're still paying for, in order to get you a job that you need so you can pay for the clothes, car and the house that you leave that will empty all day in order to afford to live in it. Interesting isn't that.
Jeff could u say about how to find the Right Companies ( Specific one ) when they are not on Linked in or any site at a time when we are in a New City trying to explore the Job market efficiently ? As some companies have very little to no visibility on social sites ..
This is about “the hidden job market” and networking to people who work for one of these invisible companies. It isn’t as easy as applying. It is doing the hard work. Do you have time?
@Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter Yes i do have about 2 weeks time , trying to get into various grps of people available at the moment but things are not going as per the plan ..what do u suggest if networking is the answer how that can be done effectively ? Need your expert advice…
