What Recruiters Look for in a Resume

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Mark Anthony Dyson messaged me over the 4th of July weekend asking for input for an article he was writing about what recruiters look for. I took the tact of what they look for in a resume.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using a Resume Template?

What I looked for was:

1. Do they have experience doing what my client or clients need someone to do?

2. Where did they do it? That’s both how recently and at what firm. Certain firms are more attractive to particular companies’ clients because of the employee’s brand.

3. Can I find the info my client will care about within one page down of their resume?

4. Will their LinkedIn profile match up with their resume? Remember, I did recruiting. I was digging into LinkedIn to find people. I wanted resumes and LinkedIn profiles to be congruent, not identical, but consistent with one another.

5. Are they local to the client? Are they willing to travel if that is what my client cared about that? If my client would not relocate someone or pay for interview expenses, I wanted to know if they would pay their own way for interviews and relocation.

6. Do they write the resume and profile well enough to demonstrate good written communications skills? That doesn’t guarantee oral communications skills, of course, but it helped.

7. Where did they get their degree from? There is a difference between the two BUs– Boston University and Bombay University.

Should I Indicate My Availability in My Resume?
