What Is The Meaning of “Internal Candidate?

Someone is competing for a job against an internal candidate. What does that mean?
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a coach who helps people professionally in a variety of ways and here, l I’m answering a question from someone. He’s up for a job in another organization and they’ve told her “We’re seeing an internal candidate,” and doesn’t know what that means. What the heck is an internal candidate?
So, this is going to be a quick video to answer that question. Now, the answer to internal candidates is we all love the idea that we can move within an organization, learn new things, apply for a job internally, get promoted, right? Move to another group. That’s called mobility.
Well, that’s what makes you an internal candidate for the job that this person is trying to get from the outside. You and she are competing for this role and the result winds up being you’re a candidate for this job, just like they are. On your side, your advantage Is that the organization knows, and even has a sense of your work ethic and capabilities. On the other hand, the outside person is disadvantaged because they already know you and you don’t cost them a fee and they don’t have to worry about you because, like I said, they know you, like you, trust you and respect you.
The “however” is, the downside from your standpoint is if you were qualified why didn’t they think of moving you into this role to begin with and open it up to the outside? But, let’s come back to the question. What’s an internal candidate?
A person internally who’s applying for the same role as an outside person.
