What Is The Halo Effect?

“The halo effect is a cognitive bias that influences how we perceive and evaluate others. It occurs when we form a general impression of someone based on a single aspect of their personality, appearance, or behavior, and then extend that impression to other aspects. For example, if we see someone as attractive, we may also assume that they are intelligent, friendly, or competent, even if we have no evidence to support those assumptions. The halo effect can affect how we make decisions, judgments, and preferences, especially in situations where we have limited information or time.”
I commented: “The halo effect is a form of projection based in fantasy. Someone projects qualities and attributes onto someone that have not been generated in reality. After all, when people interview, they tend to be on “good behavior” and not themselves. An employer is interacting with a facade that reminds them of someone else they have a favorable impression of. If you sense the impression is position, you have a temporary advantage. However, it is important to take time to critically evaluate the people you meet for how they might interact with the real you, not the projection. Remember, the halo effect is one of the main reasons why both employers AND employees express disappointment in the other after you join.’
