Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and people hire me for no BS career advice globally.
Someone asked a question about what they can do to get HR to approve a hire because they’re delaying things.
And I paused for a second and I’ve got to answer the question by starting off with who told you HR is delaying the hiring process? Because usually, they’re the messengers from other people.
For example, a hiring manager wants to keep interviewing so HR says ‘we’re not ready to make a decision yet’ and they look like the bad people. Or senior management says ‘hold off on hiring for a little while; we’re working on budget,’ HR becomes the messenger for the lies. And, thus, they’re not the decision maker about the delays; other people are.
Now if you’re hearing this from a third-party recruiter, then I’ve got to basically say, there’s definitely another reason for the delay and maybe a third-party recruiter is trying to stall for time for some other reason. For example, because they want to keep interviewing more people. HR is an easy fall guy for this kind of situation and they’re not telling you the truth.
Like I said before, HR tends to be the messenger of the lies, or the delays and not the decision maker. Keep interviewing, because this firm may choose someone else and disappoint you. And that’s the way it’s going to be. They’ve made no commitment to you.
