Recession-Proofing Your Career: Prepare for the Worst
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
You can’t anticipate everything but you can be ready just in case.
Recession Proofing Your Career: Audit Your Skills
One way to recession-proof your career is to prepare for the worst. As much as you anticipate things, as much as you prepare, you know, they’re going to do what they’re going to do. And thus, having a resume together, updating your LinkedIn profile, having a portfolio if that’s the kind of field that you’re in, outlining your successes for your resume, being prepared to talk about them, starting to talk to individuals outside your firm– It’s all part of the preparation just in case you need it. You can’t anticipate everything. It’s good to but you can’t do that. As a result, being prepared. Just like a Boy Scout or a Girl Scout will help you a lot.

You cannot prepare for the worst.
Just don’t even try.
Let’s take this example: a billionaire singer formerly entangled with a socialite celebrity known all over the internet goes off the deep end after a bad divorce, drops some decidedly 1933-1945 opinions on the record, loses a huge merchandising deal with a German sportswear manufacturer, which then causes several retailers to miss earnings, causing budget cuts and layoffs.
Now exactly HOW could any rational person have predicted the urge to self-destruct was that great? I mean, it’s not as if we’re talking the 1917 Spanish flu pandemic…. Oh, wait..
First of all, good to hear your voice again. It has been a long time. Most people don’t need to be concerned with the same things the billikonaire you are referring to does. Their universe is smaller and they need to be prepared for job loss (or consulting client loss) and how to be proactive and respond.
