Virtual Career Fairs When You Are Relocating | JobSearchTV.com
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Most people dislike the idea of attending a job fair. They feel impersonal. Like a cattle call. I understand. Virtual job fairs do serve a purpose.
Changing Your Environment at Work
Virtual career fairs. They’re the modern equivalent of the old job fairs that people would attend and most people hate it. You go to a place, there’ll be a bunch of companies in booths, collecting resumes, talking to you briefly saying, “We’ll be in touch with you, if we’re interested” and most of the time, they weren’t interested. And it was an awful experience for job hunters.
There’s now virtual job fairs or virtual career fairs, where firms are doing much the same thing. Except the Tech is a little bit different. Many of them are allowing for video interviews, once they identify someone. So, you go online, and you schedule a time. You submit a resume. You have a profile on their system, and thus, they’re able to determine that they’re interested in you.
Now I have an interview coming up for my YouTube channel and podcast with someone who owns one of these services. I’m not here to hype it. I’m just simply saying there’s one use case that I think is really good for virtual career fair. And that is when you’re planning on relocating and you don’t want to constantly go to the locations or to the new city over and over again, virtual career fairs can be a great way to interview with firms before actually making the junket to that place. They have a chance to evaluate you and assess you. And it doesn’t mean that they necessarily have a job for you at that point. But, again, do you really want to be going to that city all the time to interview? And yes, some firms will do video and they’re going to expect you to come and the job fair is going to be pointless to some of you. And to many of you, it serves a useful purpose of knowing what firms are hiring for what you do, and not having to chase them down over time.
So again, that’s one use case that I see for a virtual career fair that makes sense to me.
