What does a manager do? Tough interview question for manager candidates, that will really reveal a lot about how you think. I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career coach, a former executive recruiter. You know, I help people perform at a higher level throughout their career, whether that's a job search, hiring more effectively managing and leading, workplace-related issues.

Now, the question is one that is pretty obvious. But it's the details behind the obvious answer that's important. So what does a manager do? A manager is there to help a team get the results that they're supposed to get. And how do you do that? It's really the question.

What they don't want to hear is you boss people around. You push them, you demand of them. But what they want to hear is that you get results. How do you do that? Well, number one is you work with a team of individuals to obtain those results. You assign work; you hold them accountable for that work. But in doing that, between those two poles of the assignment and the accountability, there's a lot that can be done.

So the first thing is ensuring that they can get those results done. Coaching them, encouraging them, training them, supporting them. There's a lot of factors that a firm likes to hear when you're answering a question like this. So recognize there's a lot more that goes into your job than you get a task for your team to do, you assign it to people, and then your boss them around that they're getting results. Firms don't want to hear that in the US. Other cultures may be different.

But in the US, the answer is one where they want to talk with you about working through people and getting results. And you may want to talk in terms of how you hire people who are inspired, rather than need to motivate them. You want to bring on people for your team, who's got that light, that fire within them, and how you go about doing it. That's an A+ if you go into that. I've got other videos that speak about that kind of selection process.

But for this one, you're working through people to get results. You're doing it in a variety of different ways. That starts with how you select people going forward. Because initially you're assigned a team that exists but you're trying to support them to be effective, encourage them, cajole them, coach them, answer their questions, put them into situations where they can be successful.
