Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m called The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff for organizations for more than 40 years. Today, I want to talk with you about one of those simple and elegant questions that employers ask on job interviews that seems so easy but it’s a subtle question and the question is how do you handle stress? Now they’re not trying to find out about your workout routine and they’re not trying to find out about the last two vacations you took.
What they’re trying to figure out is how do you handle stressful situations at the office and the correct answer to that kind of question is basically to talk about . . . you know, it’s pretty common that in our work there are stressful situations that come up. What I try to do is prioritize the different situations quickly. I delegate some of the things that really don’t need my time and focus in on the ones that my time is most important to.
So, for example, if I’ve got a user or someone within the department who really needs my attention, then I’m going to take that one on head-on. I’m going to try and delegate things to others who are quite capable to do it and by offloading this, I can really dedicate myself to those situations. I also work out the gym three times a week off hours but the real thing is about how I delegate work.

So they’re not trying to really find out about your vacations and they’re not trying to find out all the incidental stuff. They’re trying to figure out do you quickly assess situations and delegate or offload things to others that don’t really deserve your attention and keep your focus on the ones that really should involve your attention. So that’s my tip for today.

Structured Stress Interview. It’s typically given to law enforcement,
military, border services agents, etc. in anticipation of closing in on a a
new recruit hire. I’m curious if you have any suggestions on how to deal
with this literally verbal assault style of ‘interview’. The best advice
I’ve received so far is to keep your cool, let them insult and call you
names, and just bear through it. THEY WANT TO HIRE YOU!

MMPI-2, which, as I understand it, is to assess personality traits and
psychopathology?

I do not know the ins and outs of the MMPI-2 well. I know it tests for far
more than what this test world.
