This is a story for those times when you despair as did the king in this story.
Once upon a time, there was a king who spoke to his subjects, telling them, "I've purchased the most beautiful ring you could imagine. It's a gorgeous diamond ring. And I intend to pass it on to my heirs after I pass. And I want to include something, a message in the ring, a few words, two or three words tops, that might be of help to them and for me, should I ever feel despair.
So he went to the wise people who he normally consulted with. No one could really come up with something adequate-- paragraph stories. Much too long to include in the ring.
So he returned to his throne and was greeted by a servant who had raised thim from being a young boy, because his mother died. And the servant said to him, "you know, I may have something for you. There was a wizard who visited your father when he was king, and gave him a message. And I heard that message. And I think it may help you." And he wrote it down. And he said, "Don't look at it; just insert it with the diamond ring. And when you have a time of despair, look at it and leave it at that."
So the kingdom winds up in war, and the king is losing very regularly. And he's being driven from his homeland. And is feeling awful. He remembers that there's a message in the ring. And he opens it up and reads-- "this too shall pass," and continues to fight. And the battle turns and the king wins the war, and the kingdom rejoices. Everyone is celebrating.
And the servant comes to him and says, open the message and read it again. "But everything is going so well. The kingdom is rejoicing, we have a celebration occurring,"
Read the message again. At which point he opens up the ring and reads. "This too shall pass." And he sits in silence for a minute realizing that most things in life are going to be impermanent, that they're going to change like the clouds in the sky.
And that hopefully we'll support you with times where you're feeling too high. Feeling high, feeling too low or very low.
