“You know, there’s only three steps into that ring. Just three. And tonight, it’s going to look as high as a mountain. And when you climb through them ropes, it’s going to be the loneliest place in the world because you’re going to be in there with another fighter who wants to take you out. So now, you got to ask yourself, are you here to prove something to other people, or prove something to yourself?”
~Creed 2
We face many situations professionally and personally where we have to confront our own self-imposed limitations. For a boxer, is stepping into the ring. For you, you may be confronting your fear of doing something in particular.
Are you here to prove something to someone else or something to yourself.
In the harsh truth is, once you know the answer, the situation you put yourself in may not have the same meaning.
Once you get to the other side of this, you develop a knowing that can only come with confronting the situation and through it.
As Adm. Stockdale described in what is referred to as the Stockdale Paradox, “”You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end — which you can never afford to lose — with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”
