The Best Way to Recession-Proof Your Career | JobSearchTV.com
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
You don’t have to wait for there to be a recession to recession-proof your career. As a matter of fact you shouldn’t wait until then. You should be doing research that doesn’t take a lot of time or effort they were all allow you to protect your career should you be caught in a layoff.
In good times or bad, recession proofing your career is critical. Because eventually, eventually, because of the nature of business in the world today, there’s gonna come a point where you’re going to need to change jobs for economic reasons and you don’t want to be surprised. So how do you do this to the best of your ability. Doesn’t mean you’re not going to get laid off. But you also want to be marketable if that happens. There’s different ways to avoid the the cuts. But let’s assume you have been cut, how do you move forward? And one of the ways is proactively you audit your skills and experiences for marketability, and test that hypothesis with informational interviews.
Now, when I speak about auditing your career and your experiences, it’s about your marketability. Is what you’re doing marketable to firms other than yours? At what price? Is it marketable to these organizations? Because you don’t want to discover you’re marketable for an $80,000 a year job if you make 175. Right? So just recognize the first thing is understanding your value in the market.
And then through informa
tional interviews, informational conversations, you talk to people in other organizations, people that you may meet through networking, or just asking for a favor, and just simply say, ‘This is what I’m doing. I’m trying to get a sense of my value in the market. Where do you see our field going to? And what do you think the value of the work is?’ Now they’ll share their experiences and don’t just talk to one; talk to multiples, and then share it with the people that you’ve spoken with, because this is valuable for all of you.
Remember, there’s going to come a time, where no matter how good your work has been and how many great reviews you’ve received, and how much praise people give you, the probability is you’re going to get fired, not for cause but for economic reasons. This will help you prevent the hardship that will come with that so that you can land quickly.
