If you’ve been an entrepreneur for 10+ years do you think I should shave some years off my resume?
Laid Off? Keep Your Job End Date Hidden . . . For a While
If you’ve been an entrepreneur for a long time, I’d lean into it. But also think in terms of transferable skills that you have. What have you done in terms of leading, managing, directing, marketing? Work those into your resume so people can see what’s transferable in your background, so that in this way, you’re addressing like, how does this guy background fit with what we’re looking for? I can’t figure it out because they’re not that bright.
And I’m not trying to be obnoxious here. They’re just not that bright. So, I’m a believer that you have to make it easy for them to see the fit.
If you make them work, they won’t get it. So, as an entrepreneur with more than 10 years of entrepreneurship experience, I would simply say, look for transferable skills that you have. And if you’re not sure, this is where chatGPT comes in very helpful.
Helpfully, you can give it a prompt along the lines of, I’m updating my resume and LinkedIn profile. I’ve been in business for myself for the past 15 years. The business is such and such where I’ve done this, that, this and that.
Could you identify 25 transferable skills that you think I might have that I could work into a resume or LinkedIn profile? They will . . . chatGPT or Gemini or Claude, whichever or perplexity will give you ideas of how you might . . . of some of the transferable skills. Look at the ones that are most valued and are most accurate. Don’t just use their answer because it wouldn’t be accurate.
Look at things that will serve you and will be accurate for you so that you’re able to work those into your LinkedIn profile, into your resume, into your stories on interviews, because chatGPT will give you ideas for how you can express yourself that will be very helpful.
