10 Steps to Prepare to Job Hunt
Should you send a thank you note after a job interview? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me because I give them no BS job search advice and coaching globally and I make job hunting much easier for people.
Now, this show has some advice on whether or not you should send a thank you letter or a thank you note after a job interview.
So why you should send one? Number one is it shows some appreciation. A thank you note acknowledges the interviewer’s time and gives you an opportunity to resell your qualifications that would make you a good fit for the role. Number two, it makes you memorable. A thank you note reminds them of you and your qualifications. After all, you’re only one of many that they’re meeting with. It reminds them about you. Number three it displays interest. It signals you’re still interested in the role and can be used as a tiebreaker in their thinking. After all, managers don’t want to extend offers to people who turn them down. It makes them look bad. Number four, it gives you a chance to provide them with additional details. You can always clarify anything from the interview. I previously mentioned reselling your positive qualities for the job. It also gives you a chance to address any rough edges too. And number five, it demonstrates thoughtfulness. A sincere personalized note shows you care.
Now why you shouldn’t say someone is it may seem old-fashioned to you. Some think of it as an antiquated practice in a digital world. It can come off as being desperate. If it isn’t written well, it can make you appear too eager and hurt your leverage. Number three, it can feel inauthentic. If it’s written like a form letter, it’s going to come across as insincere . . . and too many people write form letters instead of a human letter. Number four, it takes time. A thoughtful note for each interviewer takes effort and a lot of people don’t want to put in effort. And number five, it can seem excessive. Following up can be seen as annoying or pushy. I know you don’t want to come across as being pushy, or annoying. But that’s the negative to them.
