Taking a Chance
I am a fan of the New York football Giants. Before the opening game of the season, I listened to an interview with their general manager, Joe Schoen, who was hired a few months ago to build a successful organization.
He told a story about when as a recent graduate, he received a job offer from a medical device firm to be a salesman for them. Others from his football team had gone to work for this firm and were doing well but Schoen had an upcoming interview with a football team scheduled. It came Friday before the Monday when he had to respond and he received a phone call from the recruiter (I don’t know if it was the corporate recruiter or a third-party one, but I suspect it was the company recruiter) who had a conversation with Schoen about his thoughts about the offer.
After listening for a while, the recruiter said something to the effect of, “Your heart obviously isn’t into this kind of work so we are going to rescind the offer.” It took a while before he was hired as a scout for the Carolina Panthers and eventually made strategic job changes to the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills, and, now, the New York Giants.
A former Tampa Bay coach, Bruce Arians, famously said:
No Risk It. No Biscuit.
It means there are times when it is important to take a chance. I am not going to tell you when you should take that fork in the road, but there will be one that is important for you to take.
