Which Carton Has Which Eggs? | JobSearchTV.com

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter poses one of those tricky brainteaser questions that is so often used by hedge funds and investment banks.

Summary

Today, I want to do 1 of those hedge fund brainteaser questions that I know you all love. You're on an interview and someone peels out 1 of these questions, I'm sure you're going to go, "What the…" to yourself and then try to sort through. This 1 is a fun one.

The scenario is you have 3 cartons of eggs, they are all incorrectly marked. One is marked being eggs, one is marked small eggs, and one is marked mixed eggs. How many boxes of eggs you need to open in order to figure out which is which?

The 1st time I heard this question years ago, I thought to myself, "You have to open two," and then I paused and went, "NO!!" You only need to open one. Let me show you how.

Let's say, you open up a box of eggs that is marked as mixed. In fact, there are small eggs in there. Now, you are left with 2 boxes of eggs that you know are marked incorrectly, right? You should know which of the eggs is in which box because they are marked incorrectly. Thus, the one marked mixed might have the small ones.

When all is said and done, all you have to do is open up one box of eggs to be able to figure out this little. Then, you can say to them, "can I show you this? It Is kind of hard to explain." The idea is very simple. Whatever you open up, the other 2 boxes are also marked incorrectly so you know what they have.

How Many Square Feet of Pizza Are Eaten in the US Each Year? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1379 What a delightful question! With an acknowledgement to Yahoo! Finance and Business Insider, I walk through answering this one.

Summary

The question for today is, "how many square feet of pizza are even in the US each year?"

I want to give credit to Yahoo! Finance for carrying an article from Business Insider from 2015 that walk through a way to solve this.

The solution is really about talking out loud and being plausible. Ostensibly this is a question that Goldman and a number of other firms ask on their interviews . But, I want to be clear, the exact answer isn't the important thing. It's the process that you go through that is.

Here is what you do:
Listen to the question very carefully and if you're unsure about something ask for any sort of clarification that you think you need or if you need additional information.
From there, use a launch point.

Here's how to go through it.

If there are 320 million people in the US, how many square feet of pizza do they eat each year? To get the number, you have to figure out how many of these people actually eat pizza each year. For the sake of simplicity, startup of the round number. So, you would say, "Let's say there are about 200 million pizza eaters and that is about two thirds of the total US population. I may be being conservative but round numbers are always easier to work with." You say that out loud.

Once you have the actual population of pizza eaters you need to have the rate of pizza consumption per person. Work with the assumption of 4 slices of pizza per person per month. In other words, 48 slices per year. That can be way off, but it's a reasonable guess. Again, it's logic that matters, not the numbers.

Now, translate pizza slices into square feet. Estimate the area of a triangle. So take the base times the height and divided by 2. If the pizza slices 6 inches at the base and 10 inches long, the area is 30 inches. Multiply 30 in.² by 48 slices per year and you have the average square inches eaten per person-- 1440. Multiply that by 200 million and you have 288,000,000,000 in.² of pizza.

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: A Question About a Butcher | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers a scenario about a butcher and asks you to solve the brainteaser.

Summary

I've got another brain teaser for you. I love these things. Now, this is a very easy one. I hope you'll guess it. You'll feel better.

Companies use nonsense like that so, let me just get you prepared for the interview. Here's the question. Ready?

A butcher is five foot 10. And he has a size 12 shoe. What does he weigh?

Let's repeat that question again. a butcher is five foot 10. He's got size 12 shoes. What does he weigh?

I'm gonna pause for a second. Let me do a quick Jeopardy music.

Here's your answer. Ready? Five foot 10 size 12 shoes.

He weighs meat.

Yes. He's a butcher. He weighs meat.

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: What’s The Next Number in This Sequence? | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers one of those fun interview brainteasers that companies use on interviews.

Summary

I've got one of those fun, tough interview questions for you. I'm going to read it off the screen. You'll understand why in a moment.
What's the next number in this sequence? 10, 9, 60, 90, 70, 66.
So, what's the next number in that sequence? I'm going to repeat it again. 10, 9, 60, 90, 70, 66
The answer, the question comes from not the numbers but the number of letters for each number.
So, 10 has three letters nine has 4, 60 has 5, 90 has 6, 70 has 7, 66 has eight. So your next answer could be (I'll give you two possibilities) 96 is one but, if you want to have some fun and really end the game right there, you can use googol. Google misspelled it when they started the firm, but you answer it with either 96 which has the next number of letters or googol.

Ep 642 Another fun brainteaser used on job interviews.

Summary

Today, I am 1 of those shows that as a brainteaser for you. Here's how it goes: a man stands on one side of the river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog who immediately crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat. How did the dog do that?

The answer is they were at the North Pole or Minnesota in the middle of winter or Wisconsin in the middle of winter and the river was frozen.

Firms use brainteasers like this to see if your mind is creative enough to explore different options from different angles. In this case, why was the river not getting the dog wet?

The Key to Answering Every Brainteaser You Are Asked | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains how to answer every hedge fund brain teaser job interview question you are ever asked using the example of “how much money do I have to my pocket?”

Summary

Today, I want to teach you the trick to answering every hedge fund question that you are ever asked, every Wall Street brainteaser question that you ever asked. It's really very simple.

It goes back to the idea of Capt. Kirk, The Starfleet Academy and the Kobayashi Maru question. If you are not a Star Trek flat fan, let me explain the scenario. There is no win question that Capt. Kirk is asked. Every potential captain of the Starfleet ship is required to be placed in the position where they face death. What Capt. Kirk does is reprogram the computers in a particular way so that he is exempt from all the worst-case scenarios. He is able to defeat the systems by reprogramming the systems.

How does this deal with hedge fund questions?

What they are really looking for are a few things. (1) You want to watch a reaction to the question. So let me give you a classic question: how much money do I have in my pocket? How could you possibly know the answer that? Let's concede, you really don't know. What can you do?

You can pause, hesitate for a 2nd and say whatever it is that comes to mind. 9 times out of 10, through that they will ask a follow-up question. They may respond by saying, "That's right.." Or they may ask, "How did you come up with that? "

Then, you can follow up by saying a few different things. For example, "I doubt if you carry $20 in your pocket; I doubt if you carry $5 in your pocket. I doubt if you carry $5000 in your pocket. It seemed like a reasonable amount."

Whatever it is, in the case of a hedge fund, you don't necessarily want to shoot low because it may be insulting to the interviewer and you would necessarily want to shoot too high because why wouldn't they just have a credit card? Using that particular example,, what you want to do is very calmly and very simply respond, and then if they say,, "that's not right," you can answer by saying, "Are you sure? When was the last time you check what was in your pocket?"

Understand what they are looking for is creativity and creative thought, a degree of self confidence. They want to watch her reactions to see what your reactions are the situations, they want to see if you are flustered or not, whether you have reasonable explanations or not, and whether you have the confidence, self-confidence to respond firmly and with confidence to what they pose... That doesn't come from whether or not you have reasonable explanations and whether you have the confidence/self-confidence to respond firmly and with confidence to what they pose...And that doesn't come from the behavior.

That's the simplest way to respond to hedge fund brainteasers. Understand what they are really looking for ( in the case of how much money do you have an your pocket, some really do require some thought.) and take the time to think it through.

You can always say, "Do you mind if I have a piece of paper and a pen to work it through? They are not expecting that.. They're expecting someone who will reason it through in their head... Again, you are reprogramming the problems work for you. He said with a degree of self confidence and certainty, they can always respond by saying, "No,, you can always figure it out you had."

Again, it is your manner that they are really looking at. It is your self-confidence, it is your certainty that they are really looking at.. If for some reason this is a firm that is out of control, that really wants a lunatic, so be it. Maybe it is not for you.

Two Hedge Fund Brainteasers That Use Deflection | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers two brainteasers that used a technique called deflection in order to trick you.

Summary

I have another 1 of those fun hedge fund questions that I think you will really enjoy. "You're driving a bus and tracking the number of passengers on the bus. At the 1st stop, the bus picks up 26 people. At the 2nd stop, 15 of those people get off the bus and 8 new passengers get on. At the 3rd stop, to passengers get off and 11 new passengers get on. At the 4th stop, 3 passengers get off at 4 passengers get on. What is the color of the bus driver's eyes?"

This is a hysterical question because it is an example of 1 of those questions used to deflect you. Do you happen to know the answer by the way? You should because it really starts off at the beginning of the question.

The beginning of the question starts off by saying, "You're driving a bus." So the answer is YOUR eye color that is the factor here. Understand, there are some questions you are going to be asked that are designed to deflect your attention.

Here is another example. Tracy's mom has 4 children. April, May and June. What is the 4th child's name?

Do you know that one? If you're like most people you think the answer is July. In point of fact, you are told at the beginning that it is "TRACY's mother." So the answer is Tracy. But there is a deflection there with April, May and June to make you think that there is a pattern.

Always try to recognize the question clearly. Always try to spot the deflection from the very beginning of the question to see whether or not it is designed to throw you.
