The “Find The Heavier Ball” Brainteaser

You are given 12 balls, 11 are identical, one is heavier. How do you find the heavier ball in only 3 moves?

Summary

Here's the problem. You are given 12 balls and a scale. Of the 12 balls, 11 are identical and one way slightly more. How do you find the heavier ball amongst these 12 using the scale only 3 times.

Here's the solution.

Take 5 balls and 5 balls and weigh them. If the scales are equal, you can discard the 10 balls and just weigh the other 2 to get your answer. That would be the 2nd use of the scale, in which case you have found the heavier ball into moves.

If on the other hand, the 1st weighing of 5 and 5 balls, one group is heavier, then, of the heavier group, way too against 2 (that's the 2nd use of the scale) and if they weigh the same, the 5th ball is the one that you are looking for.

If 1 of the groups of 2 balls is heavier, then take the heavier group of 2 balls and weigh them against each other (that's the 3rd use of the scale) and you'll find the heavier ball is the one that you are looking for.

The “What Color is My Hat” Brainteaser| JobSearchRadio.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://webtalkradio.net/internet-talk-radio/2018/05/29/the-what-color-is-my-hat-brainteaser-jobsearchradio-com/

A wonderful little problem that will stump quite a few of you.

Summary

I have got a lovely little brainteaser for you. I haven't heard is used on interviews but I think it is a good one and I thought I would share it with you.

A teacher puts on 10 hats of either red or blue on 10 students. Each 1 can see the hats on all other 9 students but not his or her own. The teacher tells them that at least 1 of the hats is blue and they then ask the students to write down the color of the hat that they are wearing if they are sure about it. Or, the student can write down, "Don't know." Everyone reveals their answer at the same time and all the right, "don't know." On the 2nd day, they gather in the teacher puts on the same hats on each student. Each 1 of them has to think about the color of their had again. This time, no one can still figure out the color of their hat. Everyone writes down, "don't know."

This game repeats itself on the 3rd day, 4th day until the 9th day and still no one can figure it out. However, on the 10th day, everyone writes down the correct color of their hat. What happened? What is the color that they wrote down? The assumptions here are that throughout the 10 days, the students do not communicate with one another and they assume that everyone is smart in those that everyone else is smart as well. That's the problem we have to solve.

The correct answer is that they are all wearing blue hats. There is a proof to it. Follow the logic here. Credit for the answer goes to Pratik Pradar.

If there are k number of blue hats and, but all of them can tell at time k that they are wearing blue hats. This can be proved by induction. If there is only one blue hat, it would seem that no one has a blue hat. But there has to be someone with the blue hat so it must be him. He gets it in day one.

If there are 2 blue hats, they will think there is only one blue hat, then the person would've said on the 1st day, so it must be a blue hat. And so on. On the kth day, all K people realize that they have blue hats. Since here K equals 10, there are 10 people with blue hats.

That's her solution. If it leaves you puzzled, that happen sometimes! That's what you call brainteasers, got it?

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: Which Should You Light First? | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains how to answer this tricky brainteaser.

Summary

Here's another 1 of those tough interview questions that is actually a classic deflection question. It's really not hard period. I'm going to pause after I pose the question in order to give you time to answer. I'm going to do Jeopardy music in the middle.

So ready? Here's the question.

If having only one match on the freezing winter day, you enter the room which contained a lamp, a kerosene heater and a wood burning stove, which is you like 1st?

I'm going to repeat that.

You have only one match. It's a freezing winter day. You enter a room containing a lamp, a kerosene heater and a wood burning stove, which should you like 1st?

I gave you a clue before when I talked about this being a deflection question.

Ready?

The correct answer is . . You light the match 1st.

See some questions are designed to deflect you away from the correct answer. It's kind of like when I was growing up, there was a question that the kids would ask, "If a rooster laid an egg on the top of a pointed building, which way where the egg fall? And you kind of make the gesture of the steeple and while speaking and the hand gesture would deflect the audience from thinking about rooster? Roosters don't lay eggs. Chickens do.

So, the correct answer to that one is roosters don't lay eggs. Chickens do. It's 1 of those tricky questions. So back to this, you would you like the match 1st

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: Blindfolded at a Table | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains how to answer this delicious brainteaser.

Summary

I have 1 of those fun hedge fund is today. I'm going to read it and the answer off my screen. I'm going to give credit to a website,, thebrainteaserBible.com where I found this.

You are blindfolded and sit in front of the table. On the table and many coins, 10 of which have heads facing up. How do you split the coins into 2 groups such that the same number of coins are heads up in each group? You don't know how many coins there are. You cannot tell which coin is facing up in any way?

This is a two-step answer to it.. The 1st is that you take time coins from the group of coins you have. Let's say there are 50 points, you take 10. You take all the coins of the group of 10 and Turn them onto their opposite side. Now you're done. Here's how it works..

If there are 50 coins, and you separate them into 10, you now have a group of 10 and you now have a group of 40. Let's say there are 3 groups in the group of 10. There will be 7 in the group of 40. From the group of 10, There are 3 coins their heads, and 7 coins that are on tails. Turnover the coins in the group of 10. Now there are 7 heads and 3 tails. Now, there are 7 hands in the group of 40. Now there are 7 in each group.

How Did The Dog Cross The River Without Getting Wet? | JobSearchTV.com

Another fun brainteaser used on job interviews.

Summary

Today, I am 1 of those shows that as a brainteaser for you. Here's how it goes: a man stands on one side of the river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog who immediately crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat. How did the dog do that?

The answer is they were at the North Pole or Minnesota in the middle of winter or Wisconsin in the middle of winter and the river was frozen.

Firms use brainteasers like this to see if your mind is creative enough to explore different options from different angles. In this case, why was the river not getting the dog wet?

2 Buckets, 50 White Balls , 50 Black Balls . . . | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thebiggamehunter/2017/02/22/2-buckets-50-white-balls-50-black-balls

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers the answer to this tricky hedge fund brainteaser: you have two buckets, 50 black balls and 50 white balls. How do you set up the balls in such a way as to maximize the odds that you had he will choose a black ball.

Summary

Let's talk about another 1 of those "wonderful" hedge fund brainteaser questions, maybe it's used in investment banking, too. The question comes down to this: you have 100 balls, 2 buckets, 50 balls are black, 50 balls are white. How do you set up the 2 buckets of balls to give yourself the greatest probability that you will choose a black ball?

This makes you a great investment banker hedge fund trader, I don't know! This is the kind of question they may ask to get an idea of how you think on the spot when the pressure was on.

Use how to do it. You take one black ball and put it into one bucket. That gives you 100% probability on that side. On the other side, you put all the other balls. So one bucket bucket has 99 balls, of which 49 are black and 50 are white. The other bucket has one black ball in the bucket. How does this work?

Obviously, one bucket has 100% probability and the other bucket has slightly less than 50% probability. Let's round it out and say it is 50% (it's probably closer to 49.5%). So one side you have 100% on the other side you have 50%. Thus, your probability is just less than 75%. Those are really the highest thoughts that you can get. That, of course, is assuming that someone is a completely random way of choosing a ball. It's not like they are going to be staring at the buckets; they're going to be blindfolded when they do it..

That's the way to answer this question. You put one black wall in one bucket, 99 balls in the other and you have just under 75% probability.

How Many Quarters Does It Take to Stack Them Floor to Ceiling | JobSearchTV.com

Here, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter answers this hedge fund brain teaser question,  “How many quarters would it take to make a stack from floor to ceiling?”

Summary

I want to talk with you today about 1 of those WONDERFUL hedge fund questions. That just leaves people scratching their heads. Here's the question/situation. How many quarters would it take to stack these quarters from floor to ceiling?

Believe it or not, there is a logic to asking this question that America to get into right now. I'll simply say that what you do is walk them through your thinking and you say to them, "My best guesstimate is floor-to-ceiling is about 10 feet now. From there, is about 12/4 to an inch. " From there, you basically say, "It takes about 12 quarters times 12 inches times 10 feet is approximately 1440 quarters."

Again, you are walking them through it by saying, "there are 12 quarters to an inch, 12 inches to a foot times 10 feet and you have 1440 quarters."

The idea is about the reasoning process. Some people will freeze a question like this and they want to see how you reason things through.

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: The Helium Balloon in the Car Brainteaser | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

Listen to the full episode here:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thebiggamehunter/2017/09/20/hedge-fund-brainteasers-the-helium-balloon-in-the-car-brainteaser

EP 871 This is a hedge fund brainteaser that will stump quite a few of you.

Summary

The brainteaser for today is a fun one; it goes like this: "you are in a stopped car with a helium balloon floating in the passenger compartment. All the windows are closed. The car accelerates forward. With respect to the passenger compartment, does the blue move forward, backward, or stay stationary?"

The key to this is that air moves too. Got that?

The obvious answer is that the bullet would have a tendency to move backward in the passenger compartment , as would all the compact discs on the dashboard.

In fact, the blue moves forward in the passenger compartment because inertial forces air molecules back, creating low pressure up front into which the blue moves.

So, because the air starts moving backward, it creates a momentum that causes a low pressure up front , which moves to belong forward.
