EP 1082 Using a fable I read recently, I share a story about smart leadership.

Summary

I thought I would use a story today to illustrate a point. I want to give Keith Rosen at KeithRosen.com credit for sharing the story.

Once upon a time, there was a wise and noble king. The king lived a happy life with his beautiful wife. A few years after they were married, his wife became very ill and sadly died soon after. Unfortunately, this tragedy occurred before having children so the king was left to rule without his wife beside him. He was devastated by his loss, but kept his commitment to rule with honor and take care of the people in his kingdom. The longer that his wife was so strong he could not bear the thought of marrying again.

As the years passed, having no children of his own, the king knew he would have to find the right man (it's always a matter of the stories) to take his place as ruler of the kingdom. There was no bloodline and no son who would rightfully take the throne. He called upon the people of the kingdom to help him to succeed him. He knew there would be a test that would help identify the most promising candidate.

One day as the king is taking a walk through the countryside, he came across a HUGE sinkhole that was so large that you could fit at least 2 football fields within it. Suddenly, he thinks to himself, "I've got it! I know the test will help you identify the next king "quickly he returned to the castle to share his ideas with his advisers. Him

The next day, the King issued a decree throughout the kingdom. "Come one. Come all. In 3 weeks time, those of you who feel worthy enough to take my place will meet in the tower square to demonstrate why you should be the one to be the heir to the kingdom."

The day finally arrived and it seemed like thousands of people gathered in the town square with the dream of being chosen as the heir to the throne. The king took the people out to the countryside to show them what he had found. He then asks this question, "what should I do? This is the question that if you answer correctly will earn you your rightful place as our next king. "

After several days in hundreds of responses later no one what had come up with the right answer. Repeatedly, the king would hear the same responses – – fill it with rocks and dirt.. Fill it with water. Build a bridge over the sinkhole. Build a wall. Put signs around it. Make it a graveyard. Leave it be. Camouflage the sinkhole to protect us from our enemies.

While some of these were interesting ideas, none was the correct answer. The king became discouraged, wondering if anyone could act like a successful king. As the number of candidates start to dwindle to the remaining few, it became time for one young man to answer the king's question. A poor farm boy from the countryside who is ridiculed by those older and wiser for even considering the possibility of being king,

"So," spoke the king with a disheartened and disinterested tone, "

The young man hesitated for a moment and then responded with, "Why do anything?"

Suddenly, the king's mood changed. He looked at the young man and asked with hope, "Why? When everyone advise me what I can do with the sinkhole, why are you the only one to advise me not at all or tell me what I should do? Why do you come to me with only a question? "

The young man responded by saying, "I cannot respond, my King, I don't know your 'why.' Until I understand, not just what you want to do, but why you want to do anything about the sinkhole, only then can I discuss your desired outcome. Until then, the only course of action is to do nothing."

So, folks, this was the magic answer. Instead of telling the king what he could do, this young man simply asked the king one question – – a simple question that is so powerful and usually overlooked – – why?

After all, how do you decide whether you want to align with others if you don't know why? How can you do it unless you understand your motivations, intentions, reasons, beliefs… Why is it important to them?

I will simply say that for this young man it was the right answer. It was the answer that allows him to become king.

The other people asked, " why this boy?" The king told them, "I never wanted to fix anything. Everyone came to me with the solution to what they thought was a problem and told me how to fix it. They never took the time to uncover and understand my 'why.' My desired intention. My point of view. This young man was the only one insightful enough to uncover my intention and my point of view. "

For you becoming a leader, you have to understand what your people want and expect from you and why they want it. When leading a team, you have to develop an inspired and shared goal and vision. They don't just simply need to understand what they have to do. After all, managers can do that. To lead, you have to give them the sense within themselves as to why they are doing something.

Ideally, this comes from within, rather than through motivation. Inspiration rather than motivation. Inspiration is the quality within us; motivation is that behavioral saying that says we will get X number of responses if we do such and such.

Just to conclude, for you, leading groups of people, why do you want to do something? Why should they do something? Can you create a shared vision for your group?

How Many Square Feet of Pizza Are Eaten in the US Each Year? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

Listen to the full episode here
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thebiggamehunter/2019/02/18/how-many-square-feet-of-pizza-are-eaten-in-the-us-each-year

EP 1379 What a delightful question! With an acknowledgement to Yahoo! Finance and Business Insider, I walk through answering this one.

Summary

The question for today is, "how many square feet of pizza are even in the US each year?"

I want to give credit to Yahoo! Finance for carrying an article from Business Insider from 2015 that walk through a way to solve this.

The solution is really about talking out loud and being plausible. Ostensibly this is a question that Goldman and a number of other firms ask on their interviews . But, I want to be clear, the exact answer isn't the important thing. It's the process that you go through that is.

Here is what you do:
Listen to the question very carefully and if you're unsure about something ask for any sort of clarification that you think you need or if you need additional information.
From there, use a launch point.

Here's how to go through it.

If there are 320 million people in the US, how many square feet of pizza do they eat each year? To get the number, you have to figure out how many of these people actually eat pizza each year. For the sake of simplicity, startup of the round number. So, you would say, "Let's say there are about 200 million pizza eaters and that is about two thirds of the total US population. I may be being conservative but round numbers are always easier to work with." You say that out loud.

Once you have the actual population of pizza eaters you need to have the rate of pizza consumption per person. Work with the assumption of 4 slices of pizza per person per month. In other words, 48 slices per year. That can be way off, but it's a reasonable guess. Again, it's logic that matters, not the numbers.

Now, translate pizza slices into square feet. Estimate the area of a triangle. So take the base times the height and divided by 2. If the pizza slices 6 inches at the base and 10 inches long, the area is 30 inches. Multiply 30 in.² by 48 slices per year and you have the average square inches eaten per person-- 1440. Multiply that by 200 million and you have 288,000,000,000 in.² of pizza.

The “Find The Heavier Ball” Brainteaser

You are given 12 balls, 11 are identical, one is heavier. How do you find the heavier ball in only 3 moves?

Summary

Here's the problem. You are given 12 balls and a scale. Of the 12 balls, 11 are identical and one way slightly more. How do you find the heavier ball amongst these 12 using the scale only 3 times.

Here's the solution.

Take 5 balls and 5 balls and weigh them. If the scales are equal, you can discard the 10 balls and just weigh the other 2 to get your answer. That would be the 2nd use of the scale, in which case you have found the heavier ball into moves.

If on the other hand, the 1st weighing of 5 and 5 balls, one group is heavier, then, of the heavier group, way too against 2 (that's the 2nd use of the scale) and if they weigh the same, the 5th ball is the one that you are looking for.

If 1 of the groups of 2 balls is heavier, then take the heavier group of 2 balls and weigh them against each other (that's the 3rd use of the scale) and you'll find the heavier ball is the one that you are looking for.

The Two Doors Brainteaser | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The. Big Game Hunter offers an answer to the classic brainteaser. “You have two doors  and two people that you can ask questions of. One always tells the truth.  One always lies. You can only ask one question of one of the people. What’s the question you ask?

Summary

I got 1 of those hedge fund brainteaser questions for today-- The Two Doors Question

There are 2 doors. Behind one door is a job offer; behind the other door is all the pain-and-suffering in the world. There are 2 people outside of them. One is someone who always tells the truth;; one is someone who always lies. You can only ask one question of 1 of; what is the question you should ask in order to figure out which door it is?

Here's how it works:

Let's say you pick 1 of the guards and you ask, "What with the other guy say is the correct door to go through?"

If the other person is the liar, he would tell you the wrong door. If he is the truth teller,. He is going to tell you the correct door. If the other person is the liar, he would tell you the wrong door.. If he is the truth teller, he is going to tell you the correct door.

If the person you've asked the question of is the honest one, He will point you to the room door. After all, he is talking about liar. If that person is also the lawyer. He is also Going to point you to the Wrong door. Whichever door they pointed to. It's the opposite one that you go through.

EP 844 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers an answer to this clever little brainteaser.

Summary

I have another 1 of those fun interview questions that is designed to trip you up.

A box contains 2 coins. One is a double-headed quarter and the other is an ordinary quarter, heads on one side and tails on the other. You drove 1 of the coins from the box and it is heads. What is the probability that the other side shows heads, also?

The 1st time I thought of an answer, my instinct was to think that there was a 50% probability. I paused and paid more attention to the question. I then realized that that couldn't be possible. Here is why.

When the coin is drawn there are 4 possibilities. There is heads and heads; that is one possibility. And that choice appears twice because there are 2 possibilities with a double headed coin. There is heads and tails and tails and heads.. They are telling you right away that you are seeing heads so that 4th option isn't there (tails and heads).

There are 3 possible alternatives. Both of them involving double heads 1 is a heads and a tail. So the correct answer is that there is a two thirds probability that the other side is also going to be a heads. That's because the 4th 1 was eliminated because you drew heads right away. Right away

Sell Me This Unusable Pen | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

Listen to the full episode here:
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thebiggamehunter/2017/10/05/sell-me-this-unusable-pen

EP 886 I explain how best to answer this ridiculous question.

Summary

You know every once in a while you hear about ridiculous interview questions and I read this one and I couldn't help myself.I was going to go on the rest of my work day but I decide to respond to the question, "Sell me this unusable pen." Now you know I think it's a trap question but if it isn't you've just learned something about your potential boss here that you're an idiot. Do you really want to work for a company that wants to test you by selling something that's dogshit? I'm being that blunt about it. If you've watched videos before I don't use profanity but at the end of the day I think it's really useful to be able to look someone square in the eye and say, "no." I want to sell a usable pen. I'm never going to sell a product that's crap. If that's the way you think of your product and the way you want me to work., I'm not the right person for you and we can end the interview now.

But if you want me to sell something that works well, is a great product, something that we're proud of. I'm happy to sell it for you right now. Can we switch gears here because I don't want to go into this sort of mentality where you have the expectation that I could sell just any piece of crap known to mankind. I can't. I can't sell garbage. I can sell something that's good but I can't sell crap.

Doing that, you have to be prepared for the follow up but you've instructed them on something and you basically smacked this person in the face but, I think, in a smart way. You may not get the job and frankly you may not have gotten the job if he played along with them.

But I think by demonstrating spine, by demonstrating guts, this is male or female her . . . I did fairly strong presentation. But as a woman you can present yourself in the same sort of way as well. You know it's not rough. It's really easy to be docile in compliant, male or female here. It's tough to show the spine because there's a pleasure to be compliant. Don't be a little worm. Go out there and basically say, "I can't sell garbage and I won't sell garbage. If you think that of your product, I'm not the right person for you if you have some pride in what you do,, if you have some pride in the product the service that you sell, let me sell something like that right now and let's go forward. I think that's the ideal way to present.

Here is another 1 of those tough interview questions that confuses a lot of folks. Like most of them, it is very easy question… Today’s question is, “Al plane is flying from Paris to New York at 500 mph. There is another plane that is flying from New York to Paris at 450 mph.
