Stupid resume mistakes. And this one, especially in a lot of, there's a lot of fields for which this one is incredibly dumb, but I digress. This mistake is the one of having a resume that looks like everyone else's. Thus, there's nothing that causes you to distinguish yourself from anyone else. Like, you work in PR. Why do you have a standard resume? You work in communications. Why don't you write like a communication specialist? You work in software development. Why don't you have something on a website site that allows people to see your code?

There's so much that you can be doing to stand out from the boring, the mundane, the ordinary, that makes you into a commodity. And if you're a commodity, do you think you're going to be paid exceptionally well? Are you going to be paid commodity wages? Of course, you're going to get paid commodity wages because there's no way to differentiate you from anyone else.

So, let's not kid ourselves. If you have a resume that's dull, and boring, and ordinary, excuse me, just stretched my neck there, dull, boring and ordinary, you're gonna get dull, boring, and ordinary work that's going to pay average wages. If that's what you want, keep doing what you're doing. Seriously. Keep on doing it. But if you want to be seen as exceptional, you have to be branded as exceptional. Your resume has to show that you're exceptional, that you think differently than everyone else, that, when they do the LinkedIn search for you, or Google search for you, find interesting things about you. Otherwise, nothing different. You're on the commodity pile.
