Branding. Most of you don't brand at all. But let's just concede that one for a second. And, when you do brand, this is the mistake that you really make. And, that is, you define yourself by your history, by the skills that you have, by the accomplishments that you had, but you don't look forward. You don't try and tie the bow in any way, shape or form for the role or situations that you want to be in. Thus, you're only presenting your past to people. You're not really promoting yourself for your future and where you're trying to aspire to. With the result being you're on the conveyor belt. A firm puts you on a conveyor belt, you jump on, and it moves you along in a progression until, eventually, you're thrown off the conveyor belt.

You need to take charge of your career and, in doing so, be obvious about where you're aspiring to next. Spend time promoting yourself, getting firms to see you in a particular way. Otherwise, you're doomed to the conveyor belt. If you don't believe me, trust me! Comes the next recession, just like the last one, a lot of people, probably millions, but let's just say a lot of people, are going to be thrown off the conveyor belt, because they're going to ask themselves, what did I do wrong? And the answer is, they were dependent upon their employer, and they haven't really done anything to promote themselves. And when they did, they lived in their past and didn't do things to aspire to their future.
