Spinning Wheel | No BS Job Search Advice
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
What goes up must come down
Spinning Wheel got to go ’round
Talkin’ ’bout your troubles
It’s a cryin’ sin
Ride a painted pony
Let the Spinning Wheel spin
You got no money, you got no home
Spinning Wheel all alone
Talkin’ ’bout your troubles and you
You never learn
Ride a painted pony
Let the Spinning Wheel turn
~David Clayton Thomas, Spinning Wheel
I began work as a recruiter back in The Stone Ages and have lived and worked helping people find work through good, bad and awful times. I now coach people around job search, hiring, management, leadership and more, using my experience in search, my MSW and post-graduate psychoanalytic training to help people be more effective professionally and personally.
When headlines are unanimous in one direction or another, it is time to prepare for a shift to the opposite direction. All the headlines are continuing to perpetuate the idea that there are jobs jobs jobs galore!
It’s time to switch your thinking to prepare for the inevitable slow down that the Federal Reserve has begun inducing.
How?
No matter what your level of experience, now is the time to reinvigorate your network of relationships. You don’t “need” one another, but you may in the future as things slow down. For now, it is an exercise in reconnecting to say, “Hi,” get caught up and ask if there is anything you can do to help them. It will change.
You know it will change at some point because it always does.
Internally, how can you increase your visibility, not just with your immediate manager but a few levels up from them?
Externally, what can you do to increase your visibility and be seen as an SME in your field?
If you are in consulting, you are usually the first ones hit and the first ones to recover. How and where can you take cover and ride out “the hurricane” of an economic slowdown? Is there a former client to get in contact with? Can you start planting the idea of being converted to staff before the new budgets are approved in the fall so you might be written into it?
“Did you find your directing sign
On the straight and narrow highway”
~David Clayton Thomas, Spinning Wheel
Most people are blindsided with the music stops and they have to find a chair. Now is the time to keep an eye out for one.
