Research The Company and The People You’ll Be Meeting
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Nothing demonstrates that you are prepared for an interview more than having done some basic research about a firm.
You can’t simply rely upon what a recruiter tells you about a company; generally, the information a recruiter will offer you will be pretty “thin.”
Thus, take some time on the web to look up the basics about a firm.
- Go to the company’s website. What does it do? How does it present itself? What is the focus of their business?
- Google and any other search engine are vast resources of information. Usually, the first answer about a company in a search is the headquarters of a company and directions on how to get to their offices. It can also bring you to many articles that have been written about a company.
- Many firms will have detailed articles written about them and the article will include links to other stories written about them.
- MarketWatch, Yahoo! Finance or any other business site you like. Look for stories written by financial industry writers that will tell you about the company and its success, problems, stock price, etc.
- LinkedIn: Look for people in your network who work for the company now or have in the past who can tell you about what it is like to work there. Also, look for the profile of the person or people you will be meeting with so that you are familiar with their background.
- YouTube: YouTube is the secret research tool that many job hunters use to find public information about firms AND some other not-so-public data information about companies.
- com has employee comments about firms. Generally, the comments are from disgruntled workers and management pretending to be employees. It is important to ignore the extreme comments of both sides and look for common threads and remarks that are repeated.
- Talk to someone you know with the firm. Usually, you can do this if you are referred to a firm by an employee.
Research does not need to take a lot of time. It just needs to be done.
