A way to recession proof your career is to understand that the person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest, or work the hardest, although those are great qualities to have. People get ahead by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes they’re internal to your organization; most of the time they’re external.
Keep your resume and LinkedIn profile up to date. Every three months, do an update on LinkedIn. Turn off notifications to the people in your network that you’ve made a change before making the change, because you’re probably connected with some people at work. That will be a signal that you’re looking for something which isn’t what you’re trying to do. Just every three months, update your resume and LinkedIn profile with your successes, making sure to incorporate quality keywords into the document and into your profile.
