Questions to Ask at the End of the Interview About the Team According to HBR | JobSearchTV.com
Harvard Business Review released an article with questions to ask at the end of an interview. A lot of them, I did not like but the ones about the team I did.
Hired! Cut Your Career Search Time in Half
Harvard Business Review released an article covering a series of questions people should ask at the end of the interview. I didn’t like a lot of them, but the ones related to the team, I thought would be useful for those of you, whether you’re at a staff level, or going to be leading the team. Let me offer you their questions. Okay. Let me just scroll back here.
What types of skills is the team missing that you’re looking to fill with a new hire? I see that as a staff question. But it can be adapted into something for a leader. What are the biggest challenges I might face in this position? Do you expect my main responsibilities in this position to change in the next six months to a year? Can you tell me about the team I’ll be working with? Who will I work with most closely? What are the departments or units will I interact with? Can you tell me about my direct reports? What are their strengths? And the team’s biggest challenges? This question about direct reports. I would also add in who are my best performers? And do you have a sense of the deficiencies of the people on the staff and where I should work with them.
Clarity will always help you when you step into a new role to understand the terrain that you’re walking into, and the potential for success. You can also follow up by saying, “and were there plans to turn over the staff if I was unhappy with their performance or do I get stuck with these people forever?’ Or can I get them rotated out? For those of you in leadership, that’s an important follow up question you need to cover.
