Providing Cover

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Sometimes, people focus on the wrong things, using it as a distraction and excuse for their lack of performance.

It was put squarely in front of me yesterday as I watched a segment on ESPN about the Chicago Bulls basketball team and how their coach installed a time clock for the players to punch in at the beginning of their work day and punch out when they left.

No matter that this team was 22-60 last season and hasn’t had a winning record in 4 years, let alone competed for a championship, one of the panelists opposed the time clock, talking about how these were “grown men,” and this was wrong.

22-60.

You are the sum of your behaviors. You are your record.

22-60.

People usually say the right thing and want to do the right thing but  make excuses for themselves to rationalize their failures.

“If only . . . ,” they lament to themselves and lay into blaming others for their circumstances.

Most people are not controlled by contracts that require they work for a bad manager or company. When you start to compromise, you learn to settle for less.

“But I’ll never find a company where . . .,” they decide for everyone else. You’re right that no one worth a darn will promote a junior person with one year of experience to a department head or the C-suite. You’ll have to create that for yourself rather than expect someone to do that for you.

If the players wanted to be winners, they would have done it already. Their way wasn’t working and used the distraction of the clock as yet another excuse added to the foundation of excuses for why they were a losing team.

How many years will you let your professional excuses provide cover for your unwillingness to pay the price to be successful?
