Preparing to Job Search: What’s Transferable?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

This is another step for your preparation to search.

Answering Behavioral Interview Questions The Right Way

One thing I would like you to do, you start looking at what your skills are and what your experiences are that are transferable to another industry or field, or even your own business.  For example, if you work in the insurance industry and you are doing actuarial work, there is an analytical experience that you have from that.  We can go profession by profession , but I think you get the idea that there are things that you can dissect from your working responsibilities that could be transferred to something else.

At the end of the day, start compiling a list that you 1st start thinking of changing jobs.  It’s not like you’re only going to apply for jobs in insurance or baking or what have you.  You’re going to apply for positions in a whole host of industries and the more senior you are, the more expensive you are and firms want to know what you’ve done that relates to what they do.  Not just simply the tasks but even lines of business.

Get yourself prepared by thinking of what’s transferable about what you’ve done that relates to another industry might look for.  Again, just put a list together.  You can put it in your cover letter, rather than your resume.  In many cases, you can use it in your tailored resume that you sent to a specific firm.

Again, transferable skills are critical.
