In the NHL, there is an emergency goaltender who is available for both teams just in case both goaltenders become injured. That’s what happened for David Ayres, a 42-year-old former minor-league goaltender who now drives the Zamboni truck between periods, smoothing the ice. Ayres was called into duty when the Carolina Hurricanes lost both of their goaltenders in a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

That’s what happened for David Ayres, a 42-year-old former minor-league goaltender who now drives the Zamboni truck between periods, smoothing the ice. Ayres was called into duty when the Carolina Hurricanes lost both of their goaltenders in a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
As you would expect, he was shaky at the beginning but settled down, allowing two goals in the second when he first entered the game way. In the third and final period, he stopped seven shots. It was the first time in the history of the league that an emergency goalie had ever won a game.
But he was ready. He was in shape. His team fought in front of him to help him. And that’s what would happen for you if you are ever presented with this chance.
Expectations will be lower and you can rise above them. You need to be prepared and in shape, even if you aren’t “ready.”
