Practice Your Elevator Pitch for Job Fairs

Practice Your Elevator Pitch for Job Fairs

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In a collaborative article about attending job fairs, LinkedIn’s aAI wrote, “A key skill that your clients need to master for job fairs is the elevator pitch. This is a short and persuasive introduction that summarizes who they are, what they do, and what they offer to the employer. You can help your clients craft and practice their pitch by giving them feedback, tips, and examples. You can also role-play different scenarios and questions that they might encounter at the job fair. This will help them boost their confidence, communication, and networking skills.”

I replied, “If you decide to go to a job fair, it is a good idea to have a short pitch for when you meet someone. The format is, “People hire me to (fill in the blank) because I (fill in the blank). Mine is “People hire me for No BS job search advice and career coaching globally because I make a difficult process much easier for people.” It has to be true, rehearsed, and sound natural for you.”

Virtual Career Fairs: If You Care, You Prepare

I added, “Job fairs can have long-term negative consequences for you professionally. You wind up in a firm’s database. Years later, a recruiter attempts to refer you to this firm. Their response: “We know them,” and won’t accept the referral. What’s bad for you is that they are too busy to contact you. You lose out on an opportunity because a recruiter doesn’t want to be chastised for accepting an agency referral that would cost several thousand dollars if you are hired but is too busy to reach out to you. It happens too many times.”
