Playing Big by Starting Small | No BS Coaching Advice

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
In this periscope, I talk about the easiest way to take a big action.

I was having breakfast with someone yesterday and I did coached him at one point not too long ago and he decided to join a group of us for breakfast and when the others left, he stayed to talk with me for a while and you know he wanted to be mentored, that it was expensive to have coaching and all the usual kind of stuff that people say to apologize when they leave your coaching services. Even though he’d gotten results, at the end of the day, he was frustrated with himself, not with me, but with himself. Let me tell you what he said. He talked about his difficulty getting going (and here’s a guy who’s in his sixties and he’s under employed) and he’s had this vision of starting a workshop for teen boys and he wants to help them transition into adult life and create processes and a weekend and a workshop for them. And, well, he was in my care.

He had trouble getting going then and would kind of rant a lot and had made a little bit of progress but not a heck of a lot and he announced he was going to stop coaching for now, and would come back to me. The usual thing that people say when they like the coach but don’t want to stay in touch. I paused yesterday as he started the same thing again. I just said, “hey, what’s really going on?’ He started to talk about his frustration in getting going which I finally understood was he lamented that he didn’t really have it to do what his dream was. It’s a classic scenario that I know I’ve fallen prey to at times where my dreams are bigger than what he thinks he can deliver. In his case it caused him to get scared,  turn around and run the other way. Again, a common behavior of people . I listened to him for a while and just said ‘here’s what to do. It’s like stopping smoking. Tomorrow,  I just want you to spend 15 minutes, 10 minutes at the end of your workday you say to your wife, ‘I just need 10 minutes to go into my office for a little bit and work on this idea and think and work on this for 10 minutes a day. Some days, you’ll have an accident. You’ll work on it for 15 or 20. Ooooh! HORRIBLE! Horrible! But start off with 10. The reason I say 10 is you can make 10 minutes of time but if you think about it in six days you’ll have an hour. In a month, you will have . . . let’s do the math. Together four hours and 40 minutes. Something like that of work that you’ve done.

Now, some of this work is going to be repetitive where you say “so where did I leave off yesterday? Oh, yeah, this is what I was working on and you’ll spend the minute or two getting back to that space that you were at the day before. It’s okay. Start small work your way up. Rome wasn’t built in a day (a great platitude;  but it’s true). It takes small incremental change to affect the bigger result.

What’s the result you want to get? Seriously , what do you want to accomplish? What’s that result that you want to achieve? Are you willing to put in ten minutes? How about getting a little bit of support? Will you do it? If you’re open to getting support, if you’re smart enough to ask for help, reach out to me. My website is TheBigGameHunter.us. Schedule time with me there or email me at JeffAltman@TheBigGameHunter.us. We’ll figure out a time to speak. I’ll send you a link where you can drop payment to me and let’s get to work with one another.
