Credibility in Leadership | The No BS Coaching Advice Podcast
EP 174 Referencing Alain Hunkins new book, “Cracking The Leadership Code,” I point to a number of things he suggests to build credibility with your people,
This is The No BS Coaching Advice Podcast, episode 174. I’m your host Jeff
Altman, The Big Game Hunter and welcome! Weekly I like to spend a little bit of
time talking with you about life, the universe and everything and today,
this is almost like a run-up to an interview and we’ll be doing later this
week with Alain Hunkins. That’s Alain Hunkins, who was a new book
out called “Cracking the Leadership Code:. Three Secrets to Building Strong Leaders.”
There’s a summary on page 108 that I thought was really good. I just want to
mention to you and again I’m having him on I think I’m doing the interview on
this Wednesday. I’m not sure if it’ll be out on Monday of this of the following
week or the week after but it’ll be released fairly soon and he talks about
building credibility and, in this, he says “Leadership carries responsibility to
understand how it is as a leader you’re a target of other people’s beliefs and
expectations leadership is a one-on-one relationship and it’s up to me to lay
the groundwork of the connection because that’s my role. And you know,
they’re being watched and it’s funny he uses me as part of the story that he
tells in this chapter where I gave him some guidance so he makes a couple of
simple suggestions show up on time because you know you’re aware of how
long it take to get to places you need to go so intelligence you to build the
buffer to arrive promptly and calmly have a good system for tracking and
updating appointments because people notice when you’re making excuses and
they think that they can make excuses too and thus if you’re late you’ve got
to own up to it and say something about it and not put
it hasn’t happened do what you say you’ll do is his next major point I’ve
got a good system for tracking my commitments. Finish meetings by recapping
action steps and timelines. Use the phrase “as promised,” when delivering
on my commitments offer times these that show available to meet when I say I’m
willing and able and available to meet with someone. He tells a great story in this
chapter about how many times, people when they’re supposed to have status meetings
or review meetings experience being postponed because obviously they’re not
as important as something else that’s the way they take it folks I’m aware of
and follow through on promises and even though they haven’t been explicitly
verbalized because people notice the implicit promises you clarify the scope
of commitments upfront if you need to renegotiate a commitment you do so as
early as possible and when you don’t follow up on a
commitment, you own up to it and say it.. Lastly, and this is a great point, I know
which actions I need to demonstrate on a repeated basis because he believes in
consistency. I check in with a coach or an accountability partner for support on
developing healthy habits. I ask for feedback on how much I could be relied
- I seek coaching and support for areas
where I’m inconsistent I’m gonna point out that last line I’m looking for
coaching and support for areas where you’re inconsistent hey folks you’ve got
personal relationships where that shows up too right and after a while
unfortunately people start to give each other a pass you get no passes
professionally because what winds up happening is
people are noticing your failings and they start talking behind your back or
they don’t push as hard because they feel slighted in some way. Now you may say
to yourself, “it’s their job to do what they’re supposed to do” and you are
100% right but it’s not their job to follow you even though that’s the way
the org structure says it’s supposed to be leaders lead and they lead by example
if not just do what I say because I told you to by the way how does that how all
that work with you when you were a kid or how well does that work with your
kids now? Obviously it doesn’t) Just get yourself going and get back on track and
follow some of these suggestions and I’m sure you’ll do better.
