Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter tackles an issue that happens to many people . . . Even him.
SUMMARY:
Here on this particular show, I’m just going to tell you a quick story. Someone I knew a few years ago had a big job with an organization, did great work. He kept getting passed over for leadership roles. It was a hard lesson for him to take but they didn’t see him as the top guy. You know who that was?
Me.
People didn’t see me as being a top guy; they saw me as a good lieutenant a good number 2, the guy who was the backbone of the organization sort. The problem was, I want to be in the top spot. I wanted to be a leader.
And you know what? People just don’t see it that way. It isn’t their fault. It was mine. It was my fault and the result wound up being I wasn’t getting the accolades I wanted. I wasn’t making the money I wanted. I wasn’t getting the workflow I wanted, and I wasn’t positioned to be as successful as I want to be.
I know a lot of you are much the same boat. You do great work that others claim credit for it, and it feel like making other people successful but not you You’ve got a wife-husband-partner who’s complaining about one thing or another and is trying to help but you’re not able to hear their advice. You’re not able to hear the recommendations from because you’re frustrated. You’re frustrated that screwing yourself and you’re hurt yourself and you’re not getting to where you want.
So if you want to keep doing what you’re doing and expect to get a different result, you know, that’s insanity, but that’s what a lot of you do. No reason to. Dumb to do. Gotta make some changes. Got to create visibility for yourself. Make yourself seen as the expert things. Reach out to folks that you know from other organizations.
Start with writing. Start broadcasting. Start getting interviewed. Start getting speaking opportunities in organizations. Be the leader. Be the one that other people come to. You know what’s going to happen? Maybe your organization picks up on it but you know what? Other organizations pick up on it and they’re going to start reaching out to you. So, if your firm doesn’t give it to you, the next firm will. All you want is the outcome. It doesn’t matter where it is as long as you getting it.
So, no BS advice to help you, to help you get what you want with it, which isn’t more of the same. It’s all about moving ahead. So that’s today’s advice. Hope you find it helpful and if you do if you like my help, reach out to me.
