No One Is Perfect When Hiring

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunte

There is no perfect candidate.

The Myth of The Passive Job Candidate Exposed

Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter.

I have been involved with the fun text sequence with a friend of mine who does recruiting with a firm.   They were talking about a video that their firm is putting together for job applicants and work that they do with hiring managers.  When I talked about work with hiring managers, it is not about recruiting, but is having to get them to take action and why they need to take action more quickly.

I think this is the lament of every recruiter, whether corporate or third-party–hiring managers take their time. They just don’t pull the trigger on anyone because they keep searching for “the perfect candidate.” I am going to tell you a secret.

There is no perfect candidate.

There was always a flaw and generally, you discovered it afterwards. I want to explain why.

You will find that afterward because everyone is putting on an act during an interview. They are putting on an act; you are putting on an act. They are being phony and so are you.

No one tells job applicants at the last for people who sat in that chair left out of frustration or quit because they were incompetent Or were laid off during an economic downturn. No one ever tells people that.

You tend to be on good behavior and they tend to be on good behavior, too. It’s no wonder that there tends to be this frustration that occurs when you discover after they are on board that, shall we say, they are not ideal.

It’s 1 of the reasons I tell hiring managers to stop looking for perfection.  It does not exist.  When you screen, Focus on qualifications.

Qualifications are really the most important thing you can screen for.

You want to send them on your troops.  You want different opinions. “Fitting in,” becomes the wrong approach to take because you want differences of opinion. You want to make sure that you have looked at things from lots of different angles, instead of one homogeneous viewpoint.

Again, stop looking for “perfection,” when you can be looking for “qualified.”

Move on them. It’s not going to get much better. Remember, your last 4 hires Were not perfect.  What makes you think this 1 will be?
