No BS Career Advice: March 1, 2026
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” – William Jennings Bryan
March. It is already March.
Time doesn’t stop. It keeps driving the bus faster and faster, with us unaware of our losing runaway until the inevitable.
Don’t waste time. As the character, Red, said in “The Shawshank Redemption,” “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
The “Onlyness” Factor: Bypassing the ATS with Strategic Distinction
In the executive job market of 2026, being “qualified” is the fastest way to become invisible. When an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) scans thousands of resumes for a C-suite role, it isn’t just looking for someone who can do the job; it’s looking for the statistical outlier. To break through the algorithmic black box, you have to move beyond “best” and lean into your Onlyness.
Coined by strategist Nilofer Merchant, Onlyness is that specific spot in the world where only you stand, based on your unique history, experiences, and vision. In a world of AI-generated resumes that all sound “professional,” your Onlyness is the only thing a machine cannot replicate.
Here is the no-BS strategy for coding your unique distinction into a system designed for uniformity.
1. Shift from Keywords to “Signature Impact”
Most executives optimize for keywords like “Strategic Leadership” or “P&L Management.” The problem? Every other applicant is doing the same thing. The ATS sees this as a commodity. To bypass the filter, you must anchor your keywords in a Signature Impact that only you could have delivered.
- The Move: Don’t just list “Digital Transformation.” Identify the intersection where your specific background solved a problem no one else could.
- The Frame: Instead of a generic bullet, use: “Architected the industry’s first [X] by merging my background in [Field A] with [Field B], resulting in a 30% market share gain.” * The Logic: By linking disparate skill sets, you create a “unique identifier” in the system. The AI recognizes this as a high-value, rare data point rather than a recycled buzzword.
2. Formatting: Don’t Let the Machine Mangle Your Brand
Your Onlyness doesn’t matter if the ATS “Parser” can’t read it. High-level resumes often fail because of over-designed layouts that turn unique value propositions into digital gibberish.
- The Clean Room Protocol: Avoid columns, tables, and images. Stick to a single-column, standard font (Arial or Calibri).
- The Test: If you cannot copy your text and paste it into a plain Notepad document without it looking like a mess, the ATS is likely discarding your most important achievements.
- The Goal: Use a clean structure so the AI can clearly “see” the specific milestones that differentiate you from the “standard” candidate pool.
3. The Referral Bypass: Onlyness in the Human Loop
The most effective way to leverage Onlyness is to never let the ATS be the final judge. In 2026, “Referral Portals” are the priority lane. When you enter via an internal referral, the algorithm tags you as a “High-Confidence Match.”
- The Tactic: Use your networking outreach to find a peer who recognizes your specific “Onlyness.” When they refer you, they aren’t just vouching for your skills; they are vouching for your unique perspective.
- The Result: This referral changes how the ATS weights your data. You move from a “cold” applicant to a “vetted” strategist, bypassing the initial automated rejection phase.
4. Semantic Alignment: Matching Tone to Intent
The 2026 ATS performs “Sentiment Analysis” on your resume to see if your professional “voice” matches the company’s current strategic intent. If a company is in a “Turnaround” phase, they aren’t looking for a “Steady Hand. ” They are looking for a “Re-Architect.”
- The Adjustment: Use an LLM to analyze the job description for its underlying “Strategic Urgency.” If the JD implies a need for radical innovation, ensure your resume highlights the times you were the only person willing to break the status quo.
- The Guardrail: This isn’t about mirroring keywords; it’s about mirroring conviction. If your resume reflects the specific type of leadership the company is desperate for, the AI ranks you as a cultural and strategic fit.
The Bottom Line
The ATS is designed to find the “best” version of a standard template. Your job is to prove you aren’t a template at all. By leading with your Onlyness, you provide the machine with a data point it can’t ignore: a leader who isn’t just better, but incomparable.
Stop trying to fit in. The algorithm is actually looking for the person who stands out.
