Memorial Day

When I started in #recruiting, General Motors was the world’s largest auto maker and #hiring was coordinated by a department called #personnel. Computers were #mainframes and people needed to research companies at a #library. #resumes were deliver by the United States Postal Service. The only thing that was electronic was a typewriter.
#phones were #analog, you were thrilled to get a #hiringmanager on the phone and schedule an interview for someone with them (called a #phonesendout–it’s so old, there is no hashtag for it).
Men and women wore suits and ties to #jobinterviews and, outside of New York where I worked, you would have to give people #directions to your clients’ #offices.
#Theoldboysnetwork met in the men’s room and #men-only #wateringholes in lower Manhattan. The only black or brown faces were shining shoes for #wallstreet #stockbrokers. The only jobs available for #women was working as a #secretary or in #publishing as a #editorial #assistant.
When I think of #memorialday, I think of those who served and #died. I also think of history that has died in my #lifetime.
