Make Some Noise To Get Noticed At Work

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Jack Kelly is a writer for Forbes. He owns a search firm, The Compliance Search Group.

Discussing the idea of keeping yourself off the layoff list, he wrote,”Those who speak up, take action, and are noisy—in a positive way—will be the winners in this new economic era. Workers who have jumped on the bandwagon of quiet quitting and acting their wages will be at risk. When businesses reign inBoring | Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter expenditures, it often involves cutting personnel.

The way to excel in a difficult economy is to become noisy instead of quiet. Plan out a bold game plan to fast-track your career. Then, on an everyday basis, aggressively pursue your goals. The key is to make yourself known within the organization. If your company offers a remote or hybrid work style, go into the office five days a week. The proximity bias of always being around will be instrumental in raising your profile and standing out amongst your cohorts.

The mission is to exceed expectations. Take on high-profile tasks. Volunteer for jobs that others avoid. Ignore the co-workers who are taking it easy. Put in the hours to deliver results. Make it quality work, and not just face time. You want to be productive and results-oriented. Make sure you know your boss’ weak spots and help them in those areas.?

I replied, “The easiest way to prove your point is by looking at what happens if you don’t do what you suggest. If no one knows what you do if everything you do is ordinary, why would a firm keep you vs all the other invisible people who do as much (or as little) as you do? They can arbitrarily choose any number of you unaware of any consequence to their decision. However, if you are not invisible, if you do things that give decision-makers a reason to defend you from termination, you have a chance of survival. No one is immune from risk. After all, decisions are often made 20 levels up from you. However, somewhere in those 20 levels, you have a chance of someone saying, “Why is Kelly on the list? Replace him with someone else,” if they know of you.”
