Listening to Eric Schmidt talk about his coach, Bill Campbell, is listening to an act of reverence.
Campbell rarely told Schmidt what to do, preferring instead to ask questions to help him sort things through.
I know when I coach around a search, I need to provide pointed advice. When I wear my other coaching hats, leadership and executive coaching, in particular, I help people with my questions.
Often people take the lazy route and demand answers when what they need in order to develop is to be asked a better class of question.
If you lead, try asking questions to help someone flush out possible answers so that they learn and don’t have to ask again.
