Understand the Employer’s Perspective and Land the Job
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Are you stuck in an unending job search with few viable prospects? It’s time to change perspectives – walk a mile in the employer’s shoes.
Why Was 1 Person Interviewed and Not the Other?
I know you might just want employers to understand the daily stresses and responsibilities on your plate. You want to be heard and understood, and that’s valid. However, empathy goes both ways. Just as you want to be understood, so do the people across the interview table.
As a career coach, I’ve learned that the key to landing your next role is understanding the employer’s point of view. Their perspective shapes how they’ll react to you as a candidate. When you grasp their main concerns in hiring, you can directly address those concerns and stand out.
Here are the 3 biggest worries hiring managers have:
- Bad hires who damage team culture. We’ve all seen it – the unproductive employee stirring up drama. They disrupt collaborations and even drive away talent. Hiring managers dread unleashing this on their teams again.
- Putting their own reputation on the line. When a manager recommends a candidate, they’re staking their own credibility. If their pick turns out to be a disaster, their judgment looks flawed.
- Compromising customer and vendor relationships. Employees represent the company. The wrong person in a client-facing role can permanently damage those connections.
Luckily, you have power to tackle these concerns before you even sit down for an interview. Here’s how:
- Research the company and industry trends. This shows you understand their world and priorities. No more blind interviews.
- Optimize your resume. Demonstrate how you achieve results, collaborate, and align with company goals. Your resume is a strategic tool.
- Project positivity. Ditch the job search bitterness. Confidence proves you’re a dedicated team player who energizes others.
The job search is tough, but when you recognize what employers truly need, you have the power to change their minds. Walk a mile in their shoes, and you’ll find yourself walking through their doors.
