Jumping First | Career Angles

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Have you ever noticed how reluctant people are to step up and volunteer to do something?

There tend to be two reasons for it.

The first one is they have gotten the message either in school or at work that if you stand out or do something out of the ordinary, you are a “brown nose.” Your colleagues may nominally ostracize you or aggressively ostracize you for stepping up.

The second reason they don’t step up is that fear of failure is stronger than the benefit of success in their mind.

What happens to them if they do a good job is normally only nominally improving where they are now versus the effect if they fail on the role and what might happen to them.

Consider rewarding the people who jump first, especially if they do it all the time.

Don’t punish them if they fail. Give them attention and accolades for trying.

Don’t allow criticism of them and what they’re trying from the others who hung back rather than have the guts to step forward.

So often, the critics show up like Russian judges at the Olympics to give low scores to those who they disagree with.

Too often in companies, people are rewarded for being critics who sit on the sidelines rather than get into the arena.

Always reward the ones who are willing to jump first without a parachute.
