6 Tips for Successful Job Search Networking
I’ve had a lot of interviews and no one’s inviting me back. What am I doing wrong? I haven’t been in the interview with you to know specifically for you. So I’m going to deal with this in a general way that will help you. And it’s going to help a lot of other people too.
The first thing is, if it’s at the screener level, most screeners are basically dealing with this like checkboxes. Have you done this? Have you done that? And you’re not demonstrating that you’ve done this or done that, for them to want to present you further to the hiring manager. So when firms hire, they look for competence, self- confidence, character, chemistry, charisma, that you can connect with people, that you care–they want to trust someone. So from the standpoint of the screener, they just want to hear that you’ve done the work that they need you to have done in order to be qualified, and you’re not making that fit obvious for them.
The next thing is, if you’re further along in the process, and you’re meeting with a manager, if you’re meeting with people in the department, the same may be true, or you don’t interview well. In which case, I’ll point you in my course, The Ultimate Job Interview Framework that’s available through my website, TheBigGameHunter.us. Learn to interview. And you can rent the course; you can buy the course; you can buy the book on Amazon, or download it for Kindle. There’s just a lot that you need to learn in order to interview well. However, there’s one other possibility.
And I’ve seen this happen many times, especially with experienced people, because you’ve done a lot of interviews, and the interviews are pretty predictable. You’ve gotten stale. You know, you have to think like an actor on the stage. Every time you say the lines in the show, it has to be as fresh as opening night. And because your interviews are basically the same questions over and over again, you’re kind of bored. And it’s a boring performance that you’re given. Again, make it seem as fresh as opening night, you’ll do a lot, a lot better.
So those are a couple of basic reasons. Obviously, if you don’t know the material that’s required of you, you know, you’ve got to make sure that you can deliver the goods on the interview. But usually these are the things that show up for why people who’ve been on lots of interviews are not getting invited back.
