In Your Mid-60’s and Not Getting High Enough Offers? | JobSearchTV.com

For those of us who are older, if you are not getting interviews, let alone offers that are high enough, this is something you can do to supplement a low offer.

Over 60 Job Search

For those of you who are in your mid 60s, for those of us who are in our mid 60s, you know, you’re running up against ageism. It sure feels that way. And when offers are coming, if they’re coming, the comp levels are not high enough. And you’re starting to wonder how long you can afford to hold out to find the right offer.

Now, I want to start by saying this is not ideal. It worked for me, but it’s not ideal. And you’ll understand why. Let’s say you’re 66. And you need to continue working like most people need to do these days. What can you do? And the answer is take Social Security. And of course, it’s 70, you’re going to take the full amount. At 66 and change, you can take a slightly lesser amount depending upon all the variables that the system has set up. But the idea is, you can probably get another 20 some odd thousand dollars per year in Social Security payments to you to help you deal with this particular income interruption.

Now, again, not ideal, but if you’re listening to this advice, it’s because your circumstances are not ideal already. And thus, this becomes a way that you can sustain yourself during a time when you need to continue to work. And, AND the jobs are not quite coming to you with the right level.

You can basically say to employer, look, I’ve got some financial flexibility, and I can take a job for a little less money. Again, not ideal. I don’t have to get to where my salary was previously, I was good at managing my money, and thus be able to not make money an issue for some employers, as they may consider it to be because of what you previously earned.

Again, I would prefer you just have the whole amount of money. And if you can afford to continue to look, by all means you should do that. And many people can’t. And this becomes a way that you can cope using government money to start drawing money out of the system to support yourself. Again, not ideal.
