If You Say You’re Retired on the Application Are You Less Likely to Get Hired?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
This is a new professional scenario for many with little advice offered. Here’s my direct answer.
9 Steps to Successful Job Search Networking
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter let me answer a question from someone I
thought was a great question. If you say that you’re retired from a job in the
application for a new position are you less likely to get hired
Yes , and let me just explain how their thinking works so that you’re
prepared to counter it you see when you say that you’re retired what does that
tell them there might be rust because the engines of the vehicle has been
unused so what have you been doing to stay up to speed what have you been
doing to stay up to date now I’m addressing this on the standpoint of a
professional position where you’re doing maybe IT work engineering accounting and
finance.. You know, positions that require a
skill level that needs to be current in their thinking. Now, if you’re a greeter
at a retail store no big deal and you basically can say doing the section will
you talk about being retired that you’ve realized that finances don’t allow you
to stay retired and you want to return to work yes you can do the same thing if
you’re in their roles but that isn’t the question the question is are you less
likely to get hired yes because their fear comes up that you’re rusty if they
interview you they’re going to want to see that you’re up to speed so you’ve
got to be prepared for the interview so you can demonstrate some knowledge and
capabilities even though you may not have done it for a period of time the
one thing the question doesn’t mention is the number
of years you’ve been retired there’s a difference between retired for six
months and six years one year and ten years so that I don’t have here I’m
giving a general answer that says their fear comes up and you have to counter
that by making them feel secure and that they can trust you to do the job
