How To Spot A Toxic Workplace (Part 1)

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I hunted down leaders and staff for organizations for more than 40 Earn more moneyyears. Today I want to talk with you about one of those tough interview questions, one of those ones that are designed to go “Ooooh,” to most job applicants and cause them to confess ridiculous things about their background that cause them to be rejected. Today’s tough interview question is and. let me get serious here for a second, “Hmm, if you had a lot of money, whatever that means to you, tell me three things that you’d want to do with it.

Yeah, this question is normally asked of sales or marketing people. These are people who were supposed to have high goals, and expect to earn high compensation and, as a result, firms want to hear about goals or compensation or a lifestyle that involves a degree of substance

I remember one time me asking someone that I was interviewing for my firm that question: “So, if you have a lot of money, What three things that you’d want to do with it.” I remember being shocked to listen to someone say, “Well, I think I’d want to buy a used car and fix it up!” In other words, a lot of money to them was buying the five to ten thousand dollar car and fixing it up. I don’t think that was what I was looking to hear. It’s not what they want you to say.

“Well, I’m going to make $40,000 a year as an entry-level sales person I think I want to buy a ten-million-dollar house. No, it’s nothing along those lines. You can talk about higher goals, about moving into a better area. You can talk in terms of “My mom’s getting on in years. I’d love to buy her a house, take care of her bills , never have to work. I’d love to take a cruise. Taking a four-week cruise with the family. Bring my extended family and such with us. You know our families don’t really get together all that often and it’d be great to just take them out on this month-long cruise. Those are the kinds of things that firms want to hear. They don’t really want to hear that your goals are set so low so as to be a turn-off to them.

So remember talk about good-sized numbers. That’s really what firms want to hear but they don’t want you to be ridiculous. That’s an example I gave before.
