If You Can’t Get A Salary Increase Due To Inflation, Ask For This Instead

When You’ve Been Made Redundant, Fired, Laid Off, RIF’d

Jack Kelley wrote a piece for Forbes that dealt with this. He answered, “If you can’t get a pay increase, think of things to ask for that would improve your work life. These include a four-day workweek, shortened workdays, remote and digital nomad options, staggered hours, more vacation and personal time off, relocating to a lower cost location for the same amount of money, stock and stock options, a larger bonus (if the economy does turn around), a higher title and promotion or child-care assistance.”

He then went on LinkedIn and asked a number of us, “With inflation, a likely recession, and softening job market—what can workers and job seekers do to take control over their careers? Ask for a raise? Better work options? Quit?”

I replied, “The system is set up to “transform work” (homogenize it into the modern equivalent of factory work). Most people need to break their complete dependency on their job #salary. I started developing courses and wrote #books while I worked in #recruiting.

The problem people have asking for #4dayweeks#digitalnative roles and #working #remote (which I did when I moved to NC) is that most people don’t have a relationship with a #decisionmaker who can say yes. The person or people they speak with only have the authority to say, “No.”

Most people are best served by #piggybacking their 5 or 6% increase with a salary jump from changing jobs. Some are better served by going into #consulting and being paid hourly, investing in #rentalproperty or other favored appreciating asset (once the real estate market comes back down a bit).

#job will never be the solution but since so many people focus on it for their complete livelihood, they need to make their #careers #recessionproof, invest in themselves, treat themselves as the CEO of their own business, rather than #employees who #outsource their #careers to their #employer & expect to be treated fairly or taken care of.”
