I Had a Really Bad Interview With A Corporate Recruiter . . . | JobSearchTV.com
Should I try to address this with someone at the company?
Should I Confirm an Interview?
There is a question that I received that frankly I thought was hysterical. We just go through it with you.
“If you had a really bad interview with the recruiter, would you tell anyone at the company? Her 1st question was, ‘How are you on driving distance??’ I lived less than 10 miles away. It went downhill from there. They were so disrespectful. Should I address this with someone in the company? I don’t know if it will do any good or whether the good to them will outweigh the harm to me. Any thoughts?”
You know, I will simply say, “What was your part in this?”
These days, a lot of people send resumes with name and phone number on them. Email address. No physical address on it. The question was a reasonable question. She may not have had the resume in front of her and, I don’t know if you do this by phone or in person, I’m going to assume by phone, your part in this could’ve been that you can have your address on there. She didn’t know where you lived, and she is trying to verify that you don’t look for hours away or in some city where you will want relocation that they are not willing to pay for. It is a reasonable question in your part of it is probably not providing the information proactively.”
It went downhill from there.”
Can I Walk Out on an Interview?
Why? What did you say that was so rude or ridiculous. That prompted her to react to you? To be clear, I don’t think she should have reacted. But the notion of calling up a firm and saying, “I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT WHAT YOUR CORPORATE RECRUITER DID,” is ridiculous. It’s like the exit interview in a corporation where they think if they go out guns blazing and telling them that “everyone is crazy in this department, my boss is an imbecile, let me tell you about this imbecile,” when you’re leaving and they are staying, and they have obviously kept this person because they believe that he or she is competent. You accomplish nothing at an exit interview doing that. You accomplish nothing except to make yourself seem like a lunatic by commenting about the corporate recruiter.
Now, I again want to be clear, if we are talking about a case of harassment, you, by all means go in there and tell them that you are sexually harassed. Consult an attorney, speak with them and make it absolutely clear that you don’t want anyone else to go through an experience like that. I remember having this was similarly represented years ago. I took it to the Chairman of that organization (it was a midsized American corporation) and he politely asked me if the victim would speak with him. She was willing to do it. I’m not going to identify who they are; it is up to them; I just want you to be aware of what I was told because she seems normal.
The person was fired and deservedly so. That’s the exception to this. In normal circumstances that you are describing here, you don’t care for the fact that she asked you a question about driving distance. It was a reasonable question. You want to know if you should, “tell on her.” What are you going to “tell on her” about? That she was going to ask you about how far you are going to drive and he went downhill from there is (I don’t know what “downhill from there.” is). She may have asked tough questions based upon criteria that they are looking for.
Second Interview Questions: 3 Tips to Calm Your Fears
Her job is to evaluate and assess people for their suitability for the firm, for the job and that involves qualifications. The question of driving distance is a legitimate question to ask. I once did a super commute of 2 hours plus each way to my office in New York. He was tough on me and I was prepared to do it. For many people, they say, “Sure. No problem.” Then lateness is start to occur. There are problems that come up. It snows and they can’t get in. On and on and on.
For you as a job hunter, put this in the rearview and learn from it. Again, what was your part in this scenario the that caused her to need to ask that question and forget about it. Onto the next thing.
