I Couldn’t Take a Recruiter’s Call. I Was in Class (in a Meeting)!

A student wrote to me telling me that they missed a call from a recruiter while in class and asking if they should call back or wait for them to call again. This could just as easily happen to an experienced person missing a call while in a meeting or, in general, in the presence of others.

Someone wrote to me with a question, based upon the scenario that they were in, and it’s a student. But it could just as readily have been a person who’s in 
the workforce already. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS coaching and career advice globally, because I make things so much easier for people. And the scenario is that they’ve been applying for jobs having no success. And then they got a call while they were in class, which could be in a meeting, from an employer, but couldn’t take it because they were occupied. Should they call back or just wait for them to call again?
Now, to me, the correct answer is you return the call, but you’re probably going to get voicemail. So in leaving a voicemail for them, you just simply, with energy in your voice, say “Hi, this is so and so. I’m returning a call from so and so Please call me back at . . . ” And then you give them an available date and time as well as your phone number so that this way, they have an idea of your availability.
Give them multiple days and times– not 10. Two or three, three or four tops, and ask them if they could send you a text letting you know which one they’re going to use. That’s the simplest way to do it.
And don’t sweat it that you didn’t get. . . they didn’t get through to you. This is common. Also don’t expect you’re gonna get through to them. After all, we all use mobile phones these days. And because of robo-calls, we don’t take many calls unless someone’s in our phone.
